Recent comments by Donald Trump that arms sales to Taiwan are a “very good negotiating chip” in the United States’ dealings with China are heightening anxieties on the island democracy that Beijing claims as its own.
Trump made the comment in a Fox News interview with Bret Baier that aired right after the U.S. president wrapped up a high-stakes visit to China on Friday.
China sees Taiwan as a breakaway province, to be retaken by force if necessary. The U.S., like all countries that have formal ties with Beijing, doesn’t recognize Taiwan as a country but has been the island’s strongest backer and arms supplier.
Trump is now suggesting that is open to negotiation.

Giving up Taiwan would devastate the US tech industry that use them as a first-class manufacturing and R&D arm.
Remind me again how much of the US GPD and stock market relies on tech stocks?
Though my bet is this is just Trump’s way of squeezing more bribes out of everyone involved, and nothing will change significantly for Taiwan.
I think they are also behind this. Force Taiwan to open up the latest fab in the US - rob their tech and “sink” Taiwan.
I’m sure Taiwan is not stupid enough to give up their one big leverage. Many countries still have sane leaders.
This is the point .
Cheeto is too dumb to understand the importance of Taiwan to the US.
If it wasn’t for the millions not innocent lives at risk, I would have said, let them underestimate it and lose it
It makes perfect sense when you see that Trump’s orders are to destroy America. That’s why this is a feature, not a bug.
