I interpret these kinds of “problems” as identity-bound posturing. I think these behaviors are a knock-on effect of generalized insecurity stemming ultimately from ecological/cultural calamity, and many respond with in/out group signaling.
It can be frustrating to observe, not to defend some historical precedent, but because enabling those behaviors seems like a net negative. Teaching folks that emotional reactivity is a valid precursor to change results in these kinds of debates: manifest drama for inane shit. I see this mindset and the rabid pursuit of accessibility as an anathema to the foundation of free software. Free software is inherently empowering, but yes, it takes effort to develop the tools to reap the myriad downstream benefits. The struggle to internalize foundational concepts is the very process that creates empowerment. I may be naive and idealistic, but I think a large proportion of the population could pass these rites of passage if not enabled to self-sabotage with identity-related noise.
Also, I think an important aspect of learning history involves understanding broader context and arriving at acceptance. Acknowledging and accepting our warts is more useful than making knee-jerk reactions that add complexity and dubious associations to the infosphere.
