The process of backing up is a matter of preference. Several solutions exist from vendors to freeware.
Lots of people use ‘cp’ or ‘rsync’. I use those prior to borg backups of major repos or archive folders.
Install process is easy. Aside from hypervisors and stuff like that, I just install my OS on bare metal partition, and create a sidecar OS to do maintainance from chroot
I have internal RAID1s that store at least two directories apart from any OS or home dev.

Misc contain timestamp fstabs, mdadm.conf, rust/python/apt user-inatalled package names, among other notes and small files.
I also sync my master org directory between my documents snapshots and the repos dir

I’ve used RedHat and Ubuntu and Arch primarily because of the package ecosystem, and security is definitely major concern for most sysadmins (I am not one).

You can save tons of time by adding aliases to your .gitconfig such as ‘ga $fname’ (where “fname” would be files you want to add) the alias for git add. You can also do the same thing with gc, gs, etc and if youre like me and you write dozens of lines of code a day, it can save you a lot of time.
Why not Pop!_OS with vanilla Gnome3 and Wayland? It runs snappy and you don’t need the experimental Cosmic desktop.
