Idk most teams I’ve worked with have either known better than to deploy anything at EOD or on a friday, or make heavy use of feature flags so any change that caused an issue just got swiftly rolled back. The ones that didn’t, I made it ABUNDANTLY clear that I won’t be available outside of work hours.

If you ever try dual booting again, just wanted to say it works much better if you have linux and windows on separate drives because windows gets to do whatever it wants on its own bootloader while linux handles everything else including switching to windows. Familiar with acer nitro laptops myself and 1050ti with i7 I assume means it’s the older model with the hdd bay you can get to without disassembling. Should be simple enough to plop a 500GB SATA SSD in there for windows if you don’t have one already.

P.S. be very careful with the hinges on that laptop bc it ain’t fun when they break

Wha? That’s a dangerous mindset to teach. The last thing you want is to add network latency to every interaction or tether an app to the internet when it doesn’t really need it (but I guess big tech didn’t get the memo on that one).

Probably skill issue on my end tbh but here goes:

I’ll admit I’ve never tried GTK. I’ve always assumed it was specific to linux and used to make apps that look a certain way (like they were made for gnome) vs allowing you to make UIs the way you want to. Maybe I should look into this more.

Qt I’d say is “industry standard” but I’ve never been able to figure it out (so definitely skill issue here). It’s just that every time I’ve tried it, it’s been confusing where you’re even supposed to start. Also the last time I tried it I was a bit lost because I assume that I’m supposed to use Qt 6 (?) but it requires me to create an account because there’s a whole community/enterprise pricing thing (fair enough, nobody’s entitled to OSS work, especially not billion/trillion dollar companies). I plan to look again but that’s where I’ve been stuck so far.

I hate shipping chromium for every single app and it’s easy to fuck up a react app but there’s something to be said about cutting through the BS, just building, and having it work the same everywhere. Webapps won’t perform as well as native but they will perform well enough that it’s fine assuming the product owners give a shit.

Still learning but this has been my sentiment so far.

This makes me sad. I get using electron for cross-platform stuff like VSCode or all the other examples (trying to do desktop apps with decent looking UIs that work across Linux/Windows/Mac is a nightmare) but the clock that only works on windows? WPF and/or WinUI ARE RIGHT FUCKING THERE WHAT THE HELL?!

Most of these are great but I wanna point out some of the ones I don’t agree with

• I’ve found that the elbow grease bit is gonna be a dealbreaker for 90% of Windows users even when they hate windows. I hate it but that’s the truth
• Nvidia is much better than it used to be but it’s still a PITA unless you use a gaming distro or one that comes with proprietary drivers preinstalled and properly configured (even for someone already very comfortable with linux). This is important if you want Wayland to work correctly or need optimus on laptops. Furthermore, and this is laptop-specific, KDE Plasma is gonna have low FPS on secondary monitors or drain tf out of your battery by defaulting to dedicated graphics if your config is wrong (and it’s wrong by default on laptops)
• Switching desktop environments is a massive PITA so choosing the one you like first time is important.

Discord cannot make voice calls through VPNs

I’ve never had any issues with this, am I missing something? Is my VPN not configured properly?

Been a minute since I set it up but I use a seperare metadata provider for anime and it’s just easier to keep separate in that scenario. You can still group libraries together to show up as one in the UI so I have a “TV Shows” library group that contains everything from both “Series” and “Anime”

Not to mention the jump in quality from the 128kbps audio you rip off YouTube (maybe 192kbps if you’re lucky) to the 320kbps mp3s you can off any self respecting torrent is MASSIVE (assuming non-shit source obviously). Heck, I can live with 320kbps. I barely notice the jump to lossless on my headphones/IEMs. 128kbps though, I’m not the most discerning listener but I can still hear the artifcats.

To add to what everyone’s saying since it hasn’t been mentioned (as far as I’ve seen): You can probably disable TPM 2.0 in your BIOS once you re-install Windows 10 so Windows Update will think your PC is incompatible with Windows 11.

I dunno what the security implications are but it’s been working really well for me so far.

I’m trying. I’m trying so hard. But it keeps pissing me off because I have to dig through settings to undo changes they made to browser features that are standard across both Firefox and Chrome. It’s free and I’m not tryig to sound entitled but almost every single change they made to Chromium aside from the privacy stuff has me going WHYYYYYY?

The way they handle open in new tab, tlds like.internal, and ctrl+click to complete urls were the worst offenders off the top of my head.

Plus their ad blocker doesn’t even come close to uBlock Lite.

Yeah cash in snail mail is probably not the smartest haha. I personally use a card on Mullvad for the convenience alone - piracy isn’t illegal here and their no logs policy is good enough for my use case but it being an option tells me they take that stuff seriously at the very least which is why I mentioned it.

This. For most people, they either hated the 3.0 update (assuming 2010), or hated the enshittification after 3.2.2 (assuming 2012).

Mullvad seems to be the go-to if you want privacy (although no one thing is 100% private if you wanna go down that rabbit hole). No personal info requried, not even email. They claim no logs and they have gotten raided once and cops found nothing. I believe you can even mail them cash anonymously for a sub. Flat fee of €5/mo ($5.19/mo US) - you can pay for a single month or buy in bulk, costs the same either way.

Windscribe is another good option. More of your run of the mill VPN that seems to be well reviewed. Their free tier gives you 10GB/mo so you can see if it’s right for you (although torrents may not work - I don’t remember for sure). You can easily snag a whole year for $30 US as it goes on discount a lot.

Personally used both of these and haven’t had much to complain about. Both have great apps for almost every platform, tons of locations to choose from, torrenting works, and Netflix works (for the most part). Speeds also seem solid but I do have crap tier internet. Reviews seem to agree though.

Of course do your own research, don’t just take my word for it. People also seem to like NordVPN but I can’t really speak to that.
