How would this even work? What is a “computer” in the definition of this law? Gun nuts like to say that if you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns. But if you outlaw computers… everyone will be an outlaw. your fucking microwave is a computer. In Corey’s book he restates many times that basically every computer we have is a Turing complete von Neumann machine, or rather all computers can run all software and the only limitations are those imposed by the software licenses…and time, really. I just don’t see how you could feasible restrict the use of all the computers already on the market. My PS2’s can run Linux and send emails… radio transmissions are easy to set up with point to point contact and encrypted messaging. It’s just an insanely stupid thing to attempt. I feel the same about the age verification at the OS layer thing. Maybe you can get Apple, Microsoft, and Google to put it in their OSes, but anyone with a Linux device or a VM will be able to avoid it very easily. It’s silly.

I already mostly am because I don’t use Facebook or Instagram. Cutting off decent messaging by leaving imessage without at least maintaining RCS would really cut me off.

I tried to switch from iPhone to Pixel 10 Pro Fold with GrapheneOS, but I needed RCS to work. Unfortunately, even installing Google Messages and allowing it permissions wouldn’t allow RCS to work for more than 36 hours before I had to go through the whole install and allow process again. I would be willing to cut off all Google services, even banking apps and whatnot, but I need RCS to work. I’m unfortunately an American and cannot reliably expect my friends and family to use an app other than iMessage to text, so I need RCS.

Will Motorola provide some GrapheneOS compatible RCS client? If so, I am likely to switch.

We’re not really raising prices above costs, in fact we’re eating a lot of the cost increases ourselves to flatten the overall increase across the board that ends up with our customers. But a lot of them already made commitments to buy that we have to raise the price on through no fault of our own. And more are coming. So I don’t think the sales dudes are seeing any benefit tbh. Though you’re right to not like them.

I work for an OEM and the sales dudes have been getting reamed by our customers because they’ve had to deliver this news to folks like you. Sucks all around.
