Agree with Codeberg. I wouldn’t recommend Gitlab, nothing stopping them from becoming the next GitHub if they get enough people.

The problem is that everyone already had a GitHub account and creating an account on 10 different forges just for reporting issues is annoying. GitHub was comfortable.
Forgejo is actively working on federation for this and I think it’s super important. Create account somewhere, send issues, comments and PRs to projects on other instances.
I don’t have a book, but it’s generally like this: providers offer you an email account. Usually, the provider also offers a website where you can access that email account (“webmail”). Some providers also offer mobile apps for access. Email accounts follow some standards, and almost all of them can be accessed via standard email clients (e.g. Thunderbird).
Most have a limited size for your account (e.g. 1GB) which has to fit all your attachments etc. If it’s full, you can’t receive more emails. Some have automated spam filters etc. Many are free, but their webmail usually contains ads.

Good idea! I don’t know, but I’m watching this thread. :D

Because it clearly is, despite the missing question mark.

If that’s your first Mastodon account, the start on your own instance is harsh. You can join a relay in case you find an open one.
If you already have an account on another mastodon instance, you can migrate your followers, so their instances will get your posts on their federated timelines (and, more important, will show up under their respective hashtags).

What’s special about upscrolled other than being Pro Palestine? The screenshots just look like Instagram. So you could probably create a themed Pixelfed instance to get the same effect?
Upscrolled implementing federation would be interesting ofc. But unless I miss something, it doesn’t seem that it’s doing anything new?
I like plasma the most. I mostly like the defaults and KDE tools but in some cases enjoy the vast customization options. I haven’t tried any others in five years or so, so my opinion is a bit off. Could never get used to Gnome.
I had a quick look at the mint one when installing Linux for other people and it seemed decent as well.
Rolling releases, great docs, great amount of software available with the package manager, especially with the AUR.
I went through the manual installation a few times and while the general process is annoying and error-prone, after setting up the basics many things worked great out of the box, even the printer I once had. I’m on Endeavour now which mostly does exactly what I want.
Man, that would be great
I clicked the link and read the site and still have no idea what that is

Maybe I misunderstood what you meant with “as it gets”? I thought it basically means it"can’t be more left because it’s already maximum left" and I didn’t see how that’s supported by your experience.

I think kolektiva is defederated from some because of rather loose moderation but todon is mostly accepted

That doesn’t seem to exist? I can’t reach it

That implies US politics would be more left than German politics? Neither German nor US politics are “as left as it gets”, so I’m not sure they are a great measure here.
It’s a general purpose instance. Gargron may be left leaning, but I don’t think he’s into radical left politics?
There are instances with leftist statements in their about section, openly leftist teams and largely lefty/political local timelines.

It’s absolutely not “as left as it gets”
That’s just how the fediverse works. Your instance only know accounts from other instances by boosting or directly searching for them. Not seeing most accounts from newly federated instances is by design.
I’d just try some random general instance on each service. Especially if you want to try them. You can still move later!
