Reddit -> Beehaw until I decided I didn’t like older versions of Lemmy (though it seems most things I didn’t like are better now) -> kbin.social (died) -> kbin.run (died) -> fedia.

I stopped. Anyone who wanted to keep in touch with me was given other methods of doing that. Anyone else who couldn’t be bothered to spend 20 extra seconds? Not worth having in my life.

I just mailed my overseas vote for my state’s primary. Super red and heavily gerymandered, but not much else I can do. We at least had one progressive on the dem ballot whose site (at least until recently) said “Fuck Ice” so that’s hopeful.

No one in rural Japan (or at least my corner of it) is doing meshtastic. Japan is more strict on power as well. I am a licensed HAM and even that is pretty thin on the ground up here these days. I had family visit and one brought a node. Nothing at all anywhere we travelled even in one of northern Japan’s biggest cities

Nice. My wife and I are one different carriers purely for disaster purposes. I used to have a wifi router on a third as my travel/work-backup. This is a good step for major disasters.
The downside is that, in the event of large-scale power outages, it will only be so helpful. When I lived in the US, I rode out hurricane Ike in Houston and we had no cell service as the battery backups on the cell towers slowly expired. Some in 24 hours, the longest I think in 72.

We’re in a prime area to see it. As such, it will be cloudy and moving between rain, sleet, and snow (we’re not sure which yet) at ~17:44 local time when it comes over.

Yeah, this seems like it could easily go into premature celebration territory.

Ebay used to have valid values by shipping method and some names were wonky/overlapping. I wonder if something like that happened.

For those in poverty and without cars, trying to get somewhere to get an ID made can take a large amount of time and non-zero amount of money (even if just in trying to get to a DMV/BMV/DPS office) that they may not otherwise have.

I was terrible at standardized tests. I was in gifted and learning disability classes at the same time in middle school (basically because of ADHD and losing my homework, forgetting it at home, etc.) I’m a successful software engineer who learns foreign languages as a hobby and also run a second business (a small farm) while volunteering sometimes in my village. I think I did OK in that regard(at least in the booksmarts sort of way which is what this presumably measures).
If standardized tests aren’t working for Gen Z, we should find a better way to measure things. I doubt the sky is falling.

Nah. I’m ~40 hours a week (very rare overtime) + an on-call rotation about once a month (zero calls in months) + fully remote except for a couple events a year (though I’m welcome to go to the office more). Even if I make ~50% of whatever they’re paying, that’s still fine with me. I worked my ass off, including multiple jobs, when I was younger.
I guess the asterisk here is that I did start my own farm business on a small farm, but that’s also monetizing a hobby.

As the article points out, we’re also in an election (voting is today (Sunday Japan time)) so the cynical side of me worders if the timing is coordinated since fear and “foreigners bad” are successfully distracting from actual issues of rising prices and stagnant wages leading to a lower quality of life

Some people think the cost savings of installation, maintenance, and salaries are the reason they’'ve not returned

Research has shown that many readers today greatly value quick overviews of any article, before the reader considers whether to dive into the article’s full text.
I’m in my mid 40s and this is true of me depending upon why I might be reading something. Sometimes, I want to do a deep dive; sometimes I just want to know roughly what thing is.
However, let me say: fuck AI summaries.

People are much more likely to write a complaint letter than a praising one. Same as it ever was but internet version.
I worked for a company that had a post karma system before reddit ever existed. It was no different then. No matter how much we said that the downvote button is not a dislike button, it changed nothing.

We had quite the rough go of it in Japan. our area had whole schools closing. We got vaccinated and have fared well (so far, at least)
It sounds like a better use of that person’s time might be doing requirements/design work on the subway. Probably less obnoxious to the people around as well.

Get all my games working and, more importantly, my video editing software. I had the video editing software working, updated the OS, and it broke. This is not something that has happened to me under Windows, as much as I dislike it. I work two jobs and have home maintenance; I don’t have time to sit and troubleshoot and manually tweak things. Solve that and I will be on linux full time.
Oh yeah? Well, I’ve pooped at a significant fraction of the speed of sound
