Yeah, I always thought that was neat since it’s mostly a happy accident from needing to allow freed slaves citizenship. I much prefer that over some sort of bloodline metric.
Shitposter while I tend to two babies. Maybe when I have my life back, I’ll help us get a few more niche communities back?

Huh, always weird when I see local news on my Lemmy feed.
FYI, South Bay is especially car brained, even my LA. We have a major refinery, some car manufacturer HQs, and I’m pretty sure more mechanics per capita than most of Cali. Long history with the automotive industry going back to the founding of a lot of these little cities.
It’s a shame, too. The beach cities are lovely places to walk and somehow have terrible biking and public transportation infrastructure. The people there can be a bit entitled, though (and it’s it just me or did this guy do it right outside his fucking home? Lol). But I don’t know a solution, it’s practically every other day someone is mowed down 'round here by a muscle car, and the areas East of El Segundo have a lot more waking families since we can’t afford cars.
A little hope, though. I saw they mentioned the Sawtelle area too. I used to live there, and not only did they 180 on that case, Stoner Park is now surrounded by mini roundabouts. So change does happen after this type of thing, and their jurisdiction is LA itself, not a smaller city in a city.

Both my kids had jaundice and had to be under a blue light for a few days after birth. Not doing so doesn’t necessarily kill the kid, but it can cause brain damage.
I wonder if these parents are refusing this, it’s a bit unsettling so I bet they are, which is an upsetting thought. :/

It’s indeed the time. I found Cachy was a good pivot, similar feel but seems to work better overall. Manjaro is still based on Arch after all, technically.
So, if I’m understanding right, the computer said there’s a great chance at $1 million in the mystery box if I’m the type to pick it and only it, which I am.
But I pick it for this bad reason: friends and I like to make fun of my troll luck. I’d take it, and somehow get $0 despite several more people after me will get $1 million after me, including two boxers. We’d laugh at “can you believe this shit?” and know it just wasn’t in the stars, just like that time I broke my ankle and all the automated walkways at the airport were broken. It’s that kind of thing (and yes that happened). My infamous troll luck strikes again!
Or it’s all superstition and I get a million bucks, since I’m pretty sure my infamous luck is just confirmation bias. Either way, fun had by all.

Gas taxes pay for transportation infrastructure and environmental efforts, similar to some European countries. That at least goes to something, unlike gas prices going up due to pointless wars.
$5.19 at the cheapest near me in Los Angeles, 3/8. Just a week ago it was around $4.29, but of course I procrastinated filling up my hybrid since I still had a quarter of a tank left… Sigh.

I inherently distrust anyone religious, but it’s not really up to me and he seems like a very reasonable pick for Texas. Plus, y’all actually got a real primary! That’s rare!
With the comments talking about Crockett taking the same mistakes as Harris, it reminded me of when Harris, a DA at the time, ran for Senate here in CA. We didn’t really get serious opposition in that primary, even though the next highest was the house member (?) representing Santa Ana. She… uh… dabbed during a debate. It was a desperate move in a race drowning in money and favoritism for Harris. Harris won the primary by like, 30+ points iirc.
Now things don’t look like they can simply be bought as easily like that. People are paying attention and are rightfully pissed off at the DNC, AIPAC and the rest.

I teach, so trying to adjust old ppts for lecture got a little weird because it turned the bulletpoints into mailboxes, and equation formulas are done completely differently so libre just makes them uneditable (a picture?).
When things got wonky in lecture though I managed just fine. My students are much worse, they open shit in non-MS apps all the time (.notes for takehome exams, or like, keynote, whatever) and fuck up formatting all the time, often without even realizing it. (I do provide PDF alternatives at least). Explaining I use libre really easy in that case, lol.

Ironically, Huffman doesn’t seem to be in the Epstein files. This isn’t because he isn’t a pedophile-- he very likely is-- but he simply wasn’t important enough of a person for them to invite him or even talk about him.

I wonder what that would entail. It’s such a drastic change that is probably something big.

Meanwhile a surprising number of outlets are advertising %100, including corporate ghouls like iHeartRadio. Hopefully that trend continues as people get sick of slop pushed in marketing.

True. Maybe a guide that mentions the big names would suffice? I have a friend scared away with the choice paralysis.

The Linux part is a bit of an afterthought in that announcement but it’d be pretty cool if they’d just go all in. They admit they’re the main browser of most Linux distros after all, why not give a specific setup a shout-out? Most of the confusion in switching is in distro and interface, after all.

Tax season is upon us. So glad it’s being used for important issues like… this. /s

Former president and failed 2020 electorial candidate Donald Trump.

Sigh… reminds me I have to file my US tax returns.

To clarify for people not from CA, and having lived in OC for the better part of a decade, it’s relatively more conservative and yet also not.
For example, places like Santa Ana literally working on getting voting for undocumented people for municipal elections, cannot be more anti ICE. Naturally they’re targeted by some of the worst abductions and such, which is a shame because they’re some of the coolest people I’ve met in OC.
On the other end of the spectrum, Huntington Beach literally made a MAGA plaque for a library and many of their council members wear the red hat openly. Sure enough, very pro ICE and the majority of black and brown people you’ll see are the slave labor employed for their gardens and shit. I once was invited to a Thanksgiving there and it was awkward as shit watching gardeners working while we were sitting down for dinner.
Then everything else is mixed. Irvine, a city ultimately owned by a company, has turned weirdly blue over an influx of immigration but is still very much a fascist place at times with heavy policing. I saw a homeless man abducted by police and likely relocated to Santa Ana once, and that was a bit chilling. That’s their solution to unwanted people.

Honestly having a complete lockdown might be an improvement over the current state of things. Wishful thinking, given 47 likely wouldn’t repeat the 2020 half assed approach to disease, going full RFK on it this time around…
Of a high school of 600 people, they all know that one kid who is dating their AI, just like we knew that one kid who was emotionally attached to his anime body pillow.
