I just remember the earliest opposition to 3D printing becoming readily available to the mass public at cheap prices was the gun control lobby. They’re an “old” enemy to the hobby. I think this is more of an anti-privacy issue than anti-ownership/right to repair, but it is certainly both.

Yeah, kinda reminds me of when Sony music put a rootkit virus on their music CDs except this time it’s going through the state governments to encrypted things. This also feels as dumb as making math illegal in terms of outlawing encryption or making some numbers illegal because when arranged in a certain way they are an .stl file for a copyrighted character or an .mp3 file for a song.

This is just making something that is already illegal more illegal and opening a massive hole for government and corpo spying.

Anti-gun/gun control lobby would be my first guess. You can basically print all the serialized parts (the part required for registration) for most any gun then get the rest of the parts and assemble it yourself. The gun parts don’t necessarily even need to be based on an actual manufactured gun, there are designs for completely homemade guns down to the barrel using parts you can easily pick up at any hardware store. Then there are also people who are printing parts that can turn some semi-automatic guns into selectable fully automatic.

Problem is the plans are already in the wild for printing gun parts and for open source printers. I don’t know what good would accomplish to deter people from printing when the person targeted is already motivated enough to print one to begin with.

HOPEFULLY this is the beginning of the end for HDMI.

Qualcomm I doubt will be any better, which means if AMD or Intel don’t step up in the ARM space, then the best bet is nVidia and their 95% GPU market share.

Washington State’s bill would ban offline 3d printing and essentially force all printers to include DRM to stop undesirable printing.

yup, it’s the same playbook Apple had in the 80’s and 90’s. Get them into schools and get everyone used to their ecosystem so they would buy their products after graduating. Bill Gates did the same thing in the 90’s to outfit computer labs in schools with a bunch of Dell computers.

Yeah, I usually over spec when I build my main rig because I want to have it last and repurpose it later down the road. I finally retired a power supply that I bought back in the mid 2000s. I can’t power modern cards anymore unfortunately. 🫡 pc power and cooling single rail take a break. You’ve earned it.

Disposable my ass. I just did the final upgrades to my AM4 platform to be my main rig for the next 5 years. After that it will get a storage upgrade and become a NAS and do other server stuff. This computer 7 years in has another 15 left in it.

The part that is most offensive is the lack of choice if you don’t want to fund things that really don’t need to be funded by the public at large anymore. The price also really isn’t justifiable when a year of amazon prime and monthly Netflix is still cheaper. Even if paying for the infra was the most important thing, it isn’t needed anymore with broadband internet access available everywhere now. It’s like saying we need the pony express to deliver mail in the age of planes trains and automobiles.

Besides here in the US I don’t want the government running a public broadcast/propaganda machine. It isn’t getting better over there either. The same government that will arrest you for a social media post for being deemed offensive by an unelected beaurocrat is the same government I don’t want running any kind of propaganda arm. Which gets back to choice. If I wanted to watch any alternative, I’d still have to fund the BBC.

They are. Subs to traditional pay TV here in the states have been dwindling for years. With how broadcast television is dying anyway I wouldn’t be surprised if the UK would soon require a license to watch any live streams on the internet even without owning a TV just to make up the lost revenue. Governments are diabolical when it comes to protecting their revenue especially when they have a monopoly on violence.
