I’m not sure what specifically is meant by phonics. My grandma taught first grade for 30 years, ending around 2000. She said when phonics came in “that’s just teaching reading” and when phonics went out “well, obviously we still have to teach how the alphabet works” and when phonics came in again “eye roll”. So, whatever the school leadership says, my guess is kids are learning phonics.

Remember that the stories you hear are always going to be the ones that are most controversial, otherwise they would not be news. The day in day out work of the FDA is enormous and most of it, I believe, necessary for the level of trust in what you find on the shelf, what you’re doctor recommends, what your pharmacist hands you, that we enjoy.

The loudest complaints-- selling raw milk is technically illegal? they allow red food coloring as long as you list it in the ingredients? they may or may not allow you to call oat liquid a “milk”?-- sound pretty small to me, and also even these issues are reviewed and discussed more or less transparently in response to people’s concerns.

Set “office hours” and stick to them. She can make a list of things to do. Maybe it needs to be 20 min every evening, or maybe just once or twice a week. My partner has a similar (but more minor) problem, and this has worked both increasing self-help and making the time spent more enjoyable. I like your idea, but it just brings to mind how fragile all of our digital media is, not to mention the surrounding tech necessary to read and understand it. What we know works is to press your message to the future, grocery bill, whatever, into clay and then accidentally burn the city down around it – good for millennia.

Maybe just an awkward sales agent, or they thought you were mad at them for in their mind trying to help. I decline phone number and zip code all the time. Also been using someone else’s phone number at grocery stores for years – started by mistake. I don’t care about accumulated points or whatever but discounts at grocery store are pretty significant for me.

There are online templates and services that will create and host your terms and data privacy policy for free, with upgrades of you want more customized wording. The format is clunky and in my case allowed for more data collection than the app would ever actually do because I did not pay to customize it, but it serves the purpose. I saw a local one advertised on nextdoor and I went to the site because there are rules for advertisers on that app and I wanted to complain. It is exactly as I’d heard-- telling people there’s no reason to be seen quickly and will not be given appointment within two weeks, calling themselves a clinic but no statement of any medical service. But they said so little about what they actually do that I couldn’t find any good grounds for complaint to the app as also the app’s own content categories, “health” or something, was too vague to be considered misleading. I complained anyway that they were promoting pseudo medicine and political activity, but didn’t get a reply.

This is the truth. Not even a full grown person, not even your just-born child, no one can compel you to give your blood to save their life much less to keep them alive inside your own body for nine months.

I use osmand on Android. Bit of a leaning curve to start as you need to download the maps you want and set up features, but then it is available offline as well and can include topographical and trails or other data if you’re not just traveling in cities.

I really feel this article underrates the Congressional races happening at the same time and more of a comparison to the British and French elections. What I take from this is that the strategies available to the Democrats are constrained by the two party system, and almost completely hamstrung in the presidential election with a candidate who is incumbent. But it would be more interesting to compare what’s happening among the legislature where there are (or were before primaries) more candidates and more likelihood of creative alliances.
