This is going to federate via ActivityPub. My understanding if you’ll have a centralized repo under someone or some business. But you could have your own account and fork their repo to your federated server. You can work there, push changes and it goes up.

Being AP you can follow changes, get alerts on releases, etc.

Digital sovereignty. Codeberg is funding development of forgejo. Forgejo will federate to other instances. So you can have your own repo and someone on another forgejo can interact remotely. So no need for centralized platforms anymore. Power of the Fediverse! :-)

I hope it’s Codeberg. I think it’s a fork of gitea. And gitea can be migrated to Forgejo, which is working on federation. So I can have my server, pull code to it, work on it and for a PR to your server. No more needing accounts everywhere. And the federation well be ActivityPub powered!

Lemmy.world is run by Ruud, a man that lives in the Netherlands. He does not have the same legal protections as say Reddit. He has to obey his laws in his country. Looking up Netherlands laws, it would seem to me that having any user named “Murder all <GROUP>” is literally against the law in the Netherlands. So he has two choices. Literally risk going to prison, or having to take it down.

The brilliance of the Fediverse, as you realize because you’ve posted this on Piefed, anyone can create a server and build their own connections.

I’m against hurting anyone, but I’m in the US, where people have that right to say those things. Ruud isn’t.

These servers have specific rules for their communities for a reason. Most aren’t here to make money. No one is paying Ruud to keep people in power. He doesn’t even have to run ANY service, but he is. Because he believes in the Fediverse. But he’s still bound by his laws and it’s his server.

I’ve spoken to Ruud on an episode. He’s a lovely man that doesn’t deserve this hate.

I understand the frustration. Lemmy.world is a large instance where there are tons of people, but you don’t know the laws.

I’m not denying the censorship at all. I’m not denying that we need to speak out for Palestinians. But he HAS to follow his country’s laws or there will be no services. And when you say ggod that’s what you want, the more servers shut down, the more people will turn away. The more people are forced back to big tech where they will censor you to protect their investment. Reddit IS protected by that speech under section 230, but they’ll still censor it.

The best you can do, start your own instance. It’s possible it might be blocked by Lemmy.world if your server is breaking their rules. But at least you can get your message out.

At the moment I’m happily on matrix.org and donating monthly to them. Most of my community is on their own Matrix servers. Outages happen, but most of the time it’s matrix.org that has an issue and the self-hosters are still able to chat and make fun of me. :) In a friendly way.

Encryption keys not syncing also happens. But it seems to be getting less and less. There are different steps for different devices and platforms. Normally leaving a room and rejoining works to resolve. Sucks, but the Matrix group are ACTIVELY trying to hunt these down.

My father is 71. The Element phone install basically walks you through the process. Including which server to connect to. You’d give them yours if you want them on just yours.

Everyone’s situation is different. if you’re interested, try it. See if it works. Maybe it doesn’t. Then stick with Signal. Signal is awesome, but it is far from perfect.

Matrix is awesome, and it’s nowhere near perfect.

Use the tool that works best for you. Some security and encryption is worth it than 0 security and encryption.

What you personally view as pointless, matters to some people.

That’s for each to decide. If this is a community focused on privacy, as you said, shouldn’t we give everyone the information they asked and not make decisions on what is or is not pointless to them?

It is a fact that Signal is a centralized service. They do not allow federation. They do not allow third party clients. They could decide in the future to turn people accounts off for using third party clients.

I have lived through this numerous times. I don’t trust a centralized service as much as one I can run myself. That’s for each to decide.

That’s a third party software list created by someone not Signal and basically tells you it’s a work around to Signal:

“Signal does not have an official API, and the published code requires additional effort to be used outside of the official signal clients.”

So I’m not certain the point of the link. There are still clients for Reddit and YouTube and others that are third party and aren’t official. Signal doesn’t support those.

They don’t allow third party clients.

They are open source, and you can run your own, but it won’t ever be allowed to connect to the standard signal server.

Signal has a piece they say is for fighting spam so they can’t release the code to it. So you just have to trust them.

Signal is not perfect. It’s better than most.

I personally use Matrix as I can go to another server or run my own. I run multiple clients. It is NOT perfect and has it’s own issues.
