It was good for its time, but we need to be careful not to confuse that as an absolute statement rather than a relative one. By modern standards VHS is garbage with many significant problems, it’s just at its time everything else was worse. There were certainly many aspects of VHS that were good some even revolutionary, but it also had many significant flaws.
The biggest problem with DVD in the early days was just price. Early DVD players were ridiculously expensive compared to VHS, and the DVDs themselves were also significantly more expensive than VHS tapes. That of course changed over time, as DVD adoption drove the unit prices down across the board. By the time Bluray came around and began to drive out DVD the players had gotten so cheap you could sometimes find them for as little as $25, and DVD movies would regularly show up in discount bins for $5 to $10.
Unfortunately corporations are addicted to the micromanaging control that Active Directory gives to them. They don’t give a single flying fuck about the actual experience of using the OS, that’s a problem for the plebians, they care that AD let’s them do things like lock everyone’s background to a corporate approved image or force everyone to use Edge as their browser while disabling the password saving feature.
Basically the OS is irrelevant, it’s all about Active Directory.
Are you trying to defend DHS? You do realize it was created by Republicans right? George W. Bush created it taking advantage of the panic following 9/11. It’s an entirely redundant organization whose function can be met by the existing institutions that were doing the various jobs prior to it being formed. ALL of the legislation that was passed as a result of 9/11 needs to be repealed, and that includes the creation of the DHS.

They’re not quite interchangeable but rather are more of a scale. They start out with propaganda that’s still mostly believable but subtly wrong in various ways on Fox, but the constant hammering that they’re being lied to by <insert any non-Fox news source that’s left of Hitler> eventually drives them to checking out the crazier places like OAN, Newsmax, and Breitbart. Then the whole thing repeats but now the fact that reality doesn’t line up with the things that they’re being told convinces them that everyone is lying to them and there’re conspiracies under every rock and leaf which then drives them to the real kooks over in the podcasts, talk radio, and social media. At which point they genuinely start believing in jewish space lasers and secret pizza parlor basements where people drink the blood of children, and the transformation from mildly misinformed libertarian asshole who watches Fox News into white supremacist neo-nazi who listens to podcasts you’ve never heard of and posts racist conspiracy theories on Facebook is complete.
You know they’re nearing the end when they start complaining about how Fox News is too liberal and has been taken over by Democrats so they don’t watch it anymore. At that point they’re so far down the rabbit hole I’m not sure if anything short of professional psychological help is going to fix them. At this point I’m afraid that about a third of the US is clinically insane and I’ve really got no clue how you fix that.

Unfortunately it’s not just Lemmy. Corporations are obsessed with LLMs as are a lot of the people working for them. I daily get messages and meetings about LLMs in one way or another and it drives me nuts because it keeps interrupting actual work. In the span of like two months it went from something that was mentioned maybe once in the last year to be 90% of what everyone is talking about.

Sure, but that’s not the way the story is framed. The framing makes it seem like the FBI having the records is the story rather than the FBI firing agents for doing their jobs. The headline is just terrible and is blatantly biased to try to make the agents actions seem nefarious. To be clear I wasn’t criticizing the posting of this story or trying to suggest that the poster shouldn’t have submitted it, it’s more a criticism of reuters and the way they’ve chosen to approach this story. It would have been nice to see an article posted about this that focused more on the blatantly corrupt firing of the agents rather than dedicating most of the story to discussing the seizing of the records and getting sound bites from politicians.
… and? They were private citizens and the records were relevant to the case. The only reason they’ve got their panties in a knot over this is because they’re trying to cover things up which is exactly why the investigation was happening in the first place. As long as the FBI had a warrant for those records they seized this is a non-story, just an intelligence agency literally doing their job exactly as they’re supposed to.
Internet of Things is a terrible no good idea, but Intranet of Things has some potential. Entirely local mesh networks like Zigbee and Z-wave solve most of your problems, doubly so if you properly confine their controllers into their own non Internet routable subnets.
It’s honestly my biggest complaint with the Matter standard, it has Internet bridging baked into the design while the prior standards made that completely optional.
It was claimed by someone (an Israeli government official I think?) that there’s evidence in the files that shows Trump committed cannibalism. I don’t necessarily trust the source of the claim at all but I’m also not going to categorically say it’s not true. I don’t think it’s likely but there’s been a laundry list of things I would have said are unlikely that keep happening.
As if anyone in Greenland would want the substandard American healthcare, particularly with Mr. Brain-worm toilet-licker in charge of things now. Anyone visiting that ship is more likely to come away with some new disease like measles and a prescription to horse dewormer than they are actual healthcare. Except for all the time of the maintainers that’s being wasted. Time that is very finite and that for many of these people is a thankless unpaid job that they’re donating their nights and weekends towards doing.
You can pretty much always assume that’s the case with the US legal system. The lawyers always win, sometimes their clients do as well but that’s a lot rarer.
