The people downvoting you don’t want to be burdened with the understanding that their yelling at clouds in online forums isn’t just worthless, it’s the best possible response a fascist coup could hope for.

People get to feel like their shock and anger are being heard and their likes and upvotes comfort them that they’re not alone. Then they go to sleep that night telling themselves that with a post that got that much traction, surely someone out there is going to go out and change something. But they’re not, because they’re making their own posts and comments, believing that they’re also doing their part.

The Civil War, The Women’s Suffrage Movement, Civil Rights - none of these things would have started much less succeeded if social media had existed then. People would still be posting today about how it’s so reprehensible that white people can own another human, get their upvotes, and wait for someone else to do something about it.

Big, tough words from another armchair revolutionist. It’s easy to tell other people to put themselves and their families in harm’s way when your “contribution” to the fight amounts to screaming at clouds. You call other people fools when you’ve thoroughly fooled yourself into believing that all your anger and hate in internet forums is comparable to real sacrifice.

Rules only matter when people demand their enforcement.

These black and white statements won’t do you or anyone else any good. We understand that an inconsiderate or rude act doesn’t define a person when we can believe that about ourselves and love ourselves despite our many mistakes and cringe-worthy incidents.

When we love ourselves we begin to offer others the same grace and understanding we allow ourselves. We see the myriad reasons we don’t think or act how we’d like to and realize that everyone else’s life is just as difficult and confusing, and often for reasons we’ll never see or understand.
