Why so many pedantic idiots? Context lost?

and don’t call me Shirley

I have 2x orico enclosures, at usb 3.0(not C, I haven’t used that one yet, it has a 2tb m.2) holding a 2tb and an 8 tb SATA platters, and according to the orico site several of their enclosures explicitly state they support TRIM, my 2 don’t explicitly say they support TRIM but I can see the smart status on them

I see it more as a boiling frog, look at California/Colorado/Brazil and I think NY is getting in on it as well, then there is the UK/Australia starting points. The Gov’ts and meta etc are looking for buy in. As the discussion dies down after attestation you will see them try to take another step to submitting actual ID (you have the infra in place, just add this API…) give it a year or so after we’ve moved on to another subject
Any time “they” cry Maude’s line “Won’t someone PLEASE think of the children!” the children’s safety is the furthest thing from their mind. I hope I am wrong, but I have seen too much stuff like this to hold my breath. The more we fight every step the longer it will take to come into effect and we can hope for more buy in, from the less educated on this invasion of privacy of the population, to the resistance instead of acquiescing in advance. Linux distros are the last stand against it from major OSes, Microslop/Apple/iOS/Android are all on board, no fight. There is at least 1 distro that changed their EULA to say that their OS is not to be used in California or Colorado and lists the date that the laws come into effect.
Instead, to ACTUALLY think of the children, parents should be using the built in Parental Controls available on all OSes to keep their children from going places they shouldn’t. Getting into fantasy land here but, these controls should have simple to follow instructions so parents can easily set them up with no tech knowledge, simple access to curated blocklists (a great job for LLMs) so they can easily add an approved block list by age range, and in the case of phones the parental controls should block resetting of the phone to factory settings unless from the parental control settings.
I do not agree with this line of thinking. Instead, I reason that this PR was merged because it is not harmful, and a potential future PR implementing ID verification would not be merged. These are two separate things (PRs/merges), which are not in any way tied to each other causually.
PR vs Merge is a moot point here, I am looking at the bigger picture to see where these choices are leading. By itself the attestation is pointless as anyone can put anything they want, but it is step one - buy in. We should never just look at what is going on around us in isolation or the bigger picture will crush us all.
I hope I didn’t ramble too much here and lose my focus.

Some of us are old enough and have seen enough to KNOW this is not the end of this. They start with little non things like this (age attestation), see how the population takes it, and when they are sure a majority are onboard with this “Not really invasive, voluntary thing” they change it up to be more invasive and non voluntary(age verification). No, this guy shouldn’t be getting death threats, that is stupid, but he should hang his head in shame for complying in advance. The more we fight this, the longer it will take. I am sad the youth of today will never see the web I did.

You will have the same type of net as China, walled off from the rest of us
I’ll check that out, thanks
And yes mdf/mds think I mixed a video extension
Thanks
I will try that for the .imgs, how about .ccd, bin/cue and iirc .mkv? These images were obtained over two decades ago and have been transferred a few times, certain 1meg/Xkb files may have been lost. Daemon tools and later power iso used to mount these files no prob but I destroyed my windows a while back and am not going back regardless of what I lose as I gained more
Simple and straight forward app is Bottles, get it on your app store. I was trying to get Farming Simulator 2013 installed and it “just wouldn’t install” under lutris so I tried bottles and it worked, just worked. My only issue now is mounting non .iso iso like .ccd .img and one more I can’t remember now.
EDIT: Anyone used CDemu to mount .img or .ccd? Does it work? what about converting these files to .iso with ccd2iso or acetoneiso?
He just needs to shadow Luke, Linus is NOT a linux type of person. I do say linux is not for everyone. Linus embodies that, tho it is funny to watch his failures and Luke laughing in Arch
My dads laptop did this, the ssd was overheating, not loading even with the windows installer. The installer would just hang, remove the drive installer was good to go.
Is the drive showing correctly in bios? Is it showing at all under any identifier?
If you haven’t destroyed the data yet, what I did to recover all my dads data from an m.2 was to remove the drive and put it in an external caddy but left the case open, put it in front of my open window when it was -20 out (can prolly put it in the freezer for similar effect) then used a working pc (linux in my case) to get the data off thru a file browser, had to pause several times to let the drive cool down as the transfer went from a normal speed to only a couple kb/s.
Best of luck with your drive issue, hope it is not what I had to deal with

Oh, nice, tks. too bad they have destroyed many of our trust. Thankfully there is no win 11 at home on any pc and only 1 win 10 that I do not maintain. GF and I are both on linux

work computer, Win 11, here. I need to lock my PC when I leave my desk. Over the last month or 2 (maybe more?) when I 3 finger salute to lock, it used to open in a moment, now I can count to at least 4 before the screen comes up

scraping the fediverse
Saturday I was looking up bottles and raftvr, one of the links brought me back to LEMMY!!!
Bluescreens and daily reboots and satisfactory in vr

My external HDD automatically does this regardless of OS, it is an Orico. I have 2 of them with a 2tb HDD in one and a 8tb in another. These are only used for playback and I believe the spin down after 30 sec of no activity

On windows, you pay to get their “windows signature” so your app can be installed. Right now they just tell you not to trust that app that isn’t signed, next they will tell you “No!”

What delay? click vid, yt asks if I want to know why my connection is slow, by the time I read that the vid plays. FF+UBO+Linux

Iran watches the invaders enter their territory, no contest. Invaders go after what they think is a large supply, it is a sacrificial stockpile, invaders try to leave with their prize, Iran hits em hard with shahed drones. Invaders declare victory??
Make sure to use timeshift or equivalent(system backup and restore), before you mess with any files backup your system, do what you need and if you mess up restore the image and try again, saved me and my non tech gf a few times. Since you are looking at Ubuntu (Gnome DE) you may like Kubuntu a little better (KDE DE). Test the distros before you blow up your current setup to ensure hardware compatibility. Disable or try not to use snaps (some/all of your preinstalled user apps are going to be snaps), setup flatpak and set that as default (I found snaps to be… slightly problematic, where the flatpaks seem to work well. Sandbox is great).
Try to go in steps if possible to iron out issues before a full commitment, nothing worse than being stuck with no other option. Lutris is another wine project that is a great help, especially with their user submitted scripts to install games through a GUI.
So much nicer than the issue is between the keyboard and the chair or an I/O error
