Shit like this will continue to happen until governments start enforcing interoperable open standards and resume enforcing antitrust laws, which were, in practice, suspended for a long time, for whatever reason.

I needed a quick python script for something simple. Gemini put type annotations everywhere. I told him they were unnecessary for such a small, one-off script and it shouldn’t use type annotations during this session. It said “I’m sorry but it is best practice. I will keep using type annotations”.

I got a virus only once and it was a boot sector virus on a floppy disk. 💾 👴🏼

I love this story:
A division of AppleComputer started having developers report LinesOfCode written as a ProductivityMetric. The guru, BillAtkinson, happened to be refactoring and tuning a graphics library at the time, and ended up with a six-fold speedup and a much smaller library. When asked to fill in the form, he wrote in NegativeLinesOfCode. Management got the point and stopped using those forms soon afterwards.
We have been doing that for centuries.

NSFW AI bros doing their thing.

HOA in USA is insane. I just can’t believe they are real.

You wouldn’t be able to get close enough to them.

Hmmm… 🤔

The only way I can see forward is regulation. Antitrust laws have been suspended for too long. They have to be enforced, and interoperable standards must be fiercely enforced, without loopholes, without exceptions. If leaving Facebook for another social media platform does not have to mean you’ll lose all your connections, thanks to interoperable standards, it will be easier for people to ditch them and harder for them to become monopolies.

This is dystopian beyond Black Mirror and disturbingly real at the same time.

Sick analogy bro!

Yep. They should have been arrested.

That balance is practically impossible now. If you respect people’s attention, you will lose that attention to some other advertiser who does not.

There’s no quite part anymore. It’s all out in the open. Be it politics, capitalism, police brutality,… you name it.

Day by day, year by year, people put up with more bullshit, more bullshit gets normalized. Let me give you a slightly different perspective. If you convince yourself to think and do as you’ve explained, the next generation will convince themselves that even more degrading treatment is acceptable for the sake of employment. We will all be stripped of any dignity we have left. We’ll all be slaves in everything but name.

“Even if a firm gains monopoly power, the Chicago school prefers to allow the market to correct the problem rather than to rely on government intervention”. And of course, Reagan.
Iddon’t have a pebble watch but I find my smartwatch useful for reducing my screen time. when I get a notification, I look at my watch and don’t do anything else if it is not important, doesn’t require immediate answer. When I don’t have my watch, I look at my phone to see the notification, and check other stuff while I have my phone, like Instagram end Lemmy, and a single notification takes 20 minutes of my life.

You’re both right.
beautiful words. I have never heard it before.
