Hilarious. Nobody goes through the trouble of achieving multiple monopolies just to give people what they want.

There are parts of the world where the Facebook app basically is the Internet. Places where most people dont own a laptop, but everyone has a cell phone and phone service comes bundled with discounted Facebook data. Their hold goes way beyond social networking to, local businesses and even government services dont have webpages, they have Facebook pages only. Every game people play runs through Facebook, and all their saves are locked up with them. Every video people post or watch runs through Facebook and its hyper localized algorithm. It would take generations to displace them.

This is pretty much what everyone said immediately after Anthropic reached for the “too powerful for the public” excuse. Weve all seen this exact song and dance before. I suppose when you’ve just finished shoveling billions of dollars of speculative funding into a data center inferno its not acceptable to say that you rolled the dice and they came up snake eyes, but its still galling to be lied to so transparently.

You would suspect wrong.
Edit: Seriously, the 90s were a wild time to be a kid if you wernt growing up in a wealthy neighbourhood. We didnt have mass shootings, but there were plenty of regular shootings.
Ive heard more convincing arguments for an economy based on monkey pictures.

I dont know. Maybe its not fixable. Maybe democracy as we know it cant withstand contact with social media and AI any more than absolute monarchy could survive the printing press. Maybe it will get better on its own, as kids growing up with AI start to spot it the way people today spot CGI.

Somehow I dont think a class is going to fix this.

My God. At least the US’s fascism sort of makes sense from an internally consistent perspective. Make it make sense!

Yes back then we didn’t have Facebooks and Mypages. We didn’t even have blogs really. If you wanted to post something on the internet you got yourself a Geocities account and made your own homepage using HTML. That usually just meant putting up dozens of animated gifs saying the page was under construction. If you wanted everyone to know you were a really edgy badass who didn’t play by the rules you’d have some laughing skulls and a gif of Diablo doing his attack animation. If you actually had something to say on your page you could use the <blink> html tag </blink> so that everyone would know just how important the message was, and also to give them eye cancer.

He hasnt been CEO for decades, but he was on the board up until 2020 when MS’s current AI strategy was being developed and executed. His current big push is energy projects, all intended as AI power sources, along with actual AI companies.

Oh hello the 1980s called and they want their breaking news back.

Yea but its not end uses being targeted, its investors.

Some of you will be forced through a fine mesh screen for your country. They will be the luckiest of all.

Yes. He would really like you and the investors to know how good his fraud device is, but you have to promise not to use it to do crimes. Also, if you are afraid of his fraud device he would like to sell you fraud device protection.

If he was prominent in crypto research theres a good chance he was or had previously worked for them as well. This sounds like espionage to me. I know everyone is scared its Trump related, but this isnt how him or his lackeys operate at all.

That would be great, but I just don’t see it happening. The way things are going well be lucky to have a Department of Education in a few years, and public schools might be following right behind. Even if everything turns around tomorrow, all the resources in the world wont get everyone to the level you are aiming at. There are people out there who do not see any value in literacy and there are people who don’t have the brain power. You could assign full time private tutors to follow them around and try to teach them things for their whole lives and you’d barely get anywhere. That’s just something well have to live with. There’s never been a society where everyone was intellectually active, its always been a more or less influential minority. If you want to improve society the best approach making the intellectual voice more influential, not trying to educate the gleefully ignorant.

Is that any worse than people getting their world view from a talking head on 24 news, five second video clips on their phone, or a self curated selection of rage bait propaganda online? The mental decline of humanity is perpetual and overstated.

It sounds like you are talking about use in education then, which is a different issue altogether.
You can and should set your AI to push back against poor reasoning and unsupported claims. They arnt very smart, but they will try.

An AI can produce content that is higher quality than the prompts they are given, particularly for formulaic tasks. I do agree that it would be nice if everyone were more educated, but a large portion of the population will never get there. If simply denying them AI was going to result in a blossoming of self education it would have already happened by now.
That almost never works. By the time a monopoly starts to crumble the rot is systemic. In this case, every single internal stakeholder at MS is going to sabotage the project as soon as someone tells them their baby cant use 3GB of ram and track every mouse click the user makes while it forces flashing ads onto the screen.
