  • You can’t prove all ravens are black. The discovery of even one white raven would disprove the “fact” that all ravens are black, and we can by no means be sure that we gathered all ravens to test the theory.

However, we can look around and comment that there doesn’t appear to be any white ravens anywhere…

Do you know about the ‘bobo’ and ‘kiki’ study - can’t remember the name? People made up words that don’t exist in English and asked people whether round objects are more bobo or kiki. AI can’t answer this question - not without being fed how to. Toddlers could answer it. It comes down to how it consumes information and if there’s no pattern… When asked to define words it had been rarely fed, I.e. usernames people had made up, the AIs apparent consciousness breaks down. As soon as something isn’t likely followed by another word, the machine breaks and no one would pretend it has consciousness after that.

Learning models are just pattern recognition machines. LLMs are the kind that mix and match words really well. This makes them seem intelligent, but it just means they can express language and information in a way we understand, and tend to not do so. Consciousness gets into the “what is the soul” territory, so I’m staying away from it. The best I can say of AI is its interesting that language appears to be a system constructed well enough that we can teach it to machines. Even more so we anthropomorphise models when they do it well.

AI doesn’t have memory, it can’t think for itself - it references what it has consumed - and it can’t teach itself new tricks. All of these are experimental research areas for AI. All of them lend to consciousness. Its just very good at sentence generation.

  • Right, a question that literal neuroscientists couldn’t answer.

I believe the technical term is “your brain is way more fucking complex”. We have like 50 (I’m not a neuroscientist, just studied AI) chemicals being transmitted around the brain, frequently. They’re used and passed on by cells which do biological and chemical things I dont understand. Ever heard of dopamine, cortisol, serotonin? AI dont got those. We have neurons that don’t connect to every other neuron - only tech Bros would think that’s an acceptable expression. Our brain forms literal pathways, along which it transmits those chemicals. No, a physical connection is not the same as a higher average weight, and the people who came up with AI maths in the 50s would back me up.

AI uses floating point maths to draw correlations and make inferences. More advanced AI does this more per second and has had more training. Their neurons are a programming abstraction used to explain a series of calculations and inputs, they’re not actually a neuron, nor an advanced piece of tech. They’re not magic.

High schoolers could study AI for a single class, then neurobiology right after and realise just how basic the AI model is when mimicking a brain. Its not even close, but I guess Sam Altman said we’re approaching general intelligence so I’m probably just a hater.

  • So we’re bashing the people who installed Linux now if they used something else first? What, if they’ve ever used windows we should send them to the Gulag? Wtf is this take? Like hey you dumb fucking person who finally figured out how to get away from the corporate software you were taught to use in high school, you are FuCkInG iGnOrAnT for putting yourself in this position in the first place!!1!

Let’s not talk about the multi billion dollar industry spent locking people into an ecosystem from day 1, because blaming high schoolers and teenagers for not switching to an OS best know for running web servers is an awesome use of our time.

Speaking from experience: no one thinks about operating systems as much as we do. We are not the norm. Most people don’t want to use the computer to begin with, but conceded its faster than hand writing everything. The guy who paved my driveway will never install Arch, because he only uses the computer to get paid. My office’s cleaner doesn’t understand how computers can even be unsafe.

When I went to primary school we had windows computers. Same thing in high school. In uni, because I did comp sci, I used Linux and found it was better for me. 350 people went through first year with me. Most of them continued using Windows, although a good chunk used Mac too. Like 10 of us used Linux. It is easier not to switch and that’s not going to change. So can we stop having a go at people for not having the same interests as us, because that’s the only difference.

  • Yeah so targeting individuals or specific organisations is pretty hard. It sounds dumb but how do you get someone’s phone number if they don’t give it to you? Its hard unless you’re determined tbh which most people aren’t.

Most hackers setup watering hole style attacks, or use phishing which is roughly the same concept. Basically they cast a wide net and see what they can grab, like the browser credentials of Debra from accounting who knows everything about compound interest and nothing about opening an .exe file in an email. There are some big game hunting groups, and the LinkedIn breach made some waves (see the fappening), but your run of the mill discord-as-a-c2 style hacker isn’t going after rich people.

Someone “hacking a phone” likely put a kitchen scale iPhone app on the app store, which when first opened asks for permissions for microphone, camera, text messages, contacts and file storage, and sends all that information to Argentina for a week or so until their app gets banned.

Also, the most likely person to hack your phone seems to be someone in your household, abusive parent or spouse sorta thing. Most common devices to get hacked are laptops, usually windows. Its just kinda hard to hack a phone. Unless you know a lot about compressed image formats and the iPhone messages app apparently because NSO made like 5 zero days in a row out of that.

  • Most hacks interact with Linux because its in almost every corporate environment. People can still get scammed on Linux on their personal device too since rdp clients are compatible and a common method used. Linux Desktop is 4% market share (according to steam surveys?) but server infrastructure is largely Linux based, from firewalls to Web servers to database infrastructure. Most people host some form of Linux environment and lots of ransomware actors have Linux specific encryptors.

Think of it this way: if the environment you just hacked has their corporate SQL database with all of their trade secrets sitting on Linux infra, and you’re a ransomware actor, you’re not going to give up and go hack someone else. Well, not if you’re any good I guess.

The Linux community is better at finding and detecting this stuff due to more people looking at it and open source making it available etc. It’s attack surface (software that could be attacked) is still huge and the danger comes from outdated versions and misconfigurations just like anything else.

Patch often, install from trusted sources, have backups. That’s really all you can do. Every environment has vulnerabilities. They sit at desks and push keys on the keyboard.

  • I actually have a person in my life complain about this shit with the last Bond movie (I havent watched it, i just heard complaining). Oh and Into the Spiderverse, he disliked spiderman being non-white - even though Peter Parker is in that fucking film. He also uses the phrase woke all the time.

I really don’t value his opinions on these sorts of issues and neither should anyone. He’s got so little in his life and these stories are a powerful escape from the shit he isn’t dealing with. I won’t go into it, not my circus etc.

Basically, he likes to imagine himself as Luke Skywalker and he can’t imagine himself as Rey so she’s woke and bad. It’s a boring way of consuming media and he’s an idiot. He says there’s an agenda but can self identify the agenda is maybe letting the women and coloured people be on screen sometimes. However, they do not look like him so they are bad and the agenda is bad.

    They’re not worth listening to.
