This is not an issue on Linux or Macs.
Even on windows, if you play the movie (so M2TS with external audio and subs), you would simply get subtitles with the PowerShell code as subtitle text at one point.
They are way over hyping this issue.
Remember, we got to loop it through Jones!

Based on the title, I first thought subtitles embedded in a container (like MKV) could be used to launch malware.
Thankfully this is not the case. I was really worried for a second.
This honestly has nothing to do with video formats or even torrents.
If you are pirating you should have enough common sense to not click on random .lnk files.
Most reputable trackers/indexers don’t allow .lnk files or even random raw M2TS files.

Not unless the artist is selling directly
More often than not, for niche and/or non-english content, this is indeed the case. I also don’t see the big deal with supporting a smaller publisher.

Does the future seem bleak? Are we going to be stuck with shitty WebDLs for most new content?
For mainstream content and somewhat well known content, both regular BD and 4K BD rip are widely posted shortly after release.
You do have some truly niche content and non-english content where it’s difficult to find BDRips / BD Remuxes, but you can usually access older DVDRips. If you’re into this kind of content (as I am), you might as well just buy the BD (or stick to the DVDRip which is fine as far as I am concerned).

These days, torrents are honestly not as big of an issue from IP holders perspective as you would think.
In the mid 2000s, torrents accounted for 30% to 50% of all internet traffic (with higher share during peak hours). It was a big deal.
Nowadays, there are other priorities and torrents are seen as less pressing challenge.

An alternative that hasn’t been presented yet.
Why not use less well known foreign public trackers? Rutracker has a stupid amount of content, including a lot of niche music content.
If you are worried about Rutracker being too well known, you can try Mazepa Torrent. This is only relevant for movies and shows. Their collection isn’t as good as rutracker, but they have most new releases. While the default audio language is Ukrainian, English is always included (this would an issue for non-English language movies/shows, but English subtitles are usually included).

As brickfrog mentioned, you can stream MP4 easily if you enable both sequential download and first/last piece (any torrent client worth its salt has these options).

Sure, but why not unpack them and share the MKV?

I am genuinely curious what containers you are refering to. The only ones that come to mind are DVD and BD.
MKV definitely streams great, IIRC so do AVI and MP4. Almost all video torrents are in MKV with some older ones in AVI and few random MP4s here and there.
The one other issue is RAR’d releases, those can’t be streamed. I honestly don’t understand why people post RAR’d video as it doesn’t really save space.
The other issue (perhaps a much more important one) with streaming torrents is sometimes you can’t get a high enough speed to stream in real time, but that tends to be limited to more niche content (that often isn’t even available via any streaming provider).

I clarified what I meant by economic dead end. It’s not going to happen tomorrow or even in ten years. But absolute corruption, rollback of democracy and a population where a large number of people support crime and corruption will have a caustic effect in the long term. It’s a straw man to suggest that I was claiming an immense collapse in American economic might.
At one point the “sun never set on the British empire” and now the British empire is no more. There are also examples of economies that were once top end, but are now closer to middle income.
I don’t think you understand the extent to which American “soft power” is being eroded right now. What countries have you lived in? What languages other than English do you speak? Do you have close friends in other countries?
Of course America is major economy, that doesn’t mean the rest of the world doesn’t exist. Just look at the state of Chinese products in the early 2000s and where they are now.
People don’t like thugs and liars, especially ones who are constantly parroting polemics about “freedom for this and that” while engaging in criminality and opposing democracy.

Of course it can happen elsewhere.
Just US has a massive influence on tech platforms, and they are currently under-going an oligarch takeover (oligarch influence was already bad irrespective of whether the far right or centre right was in power).
Mind you I am not anti-American. I have largely always defended the US as a matter of pragmatism (it is the largest and most influential democracy-leaning country with a measure of respect for human right). US has done really bad things, but they have done good things as well. I can’t say the same about say China or Russia.

Not an Apple user, so I didn’t know about this. Extremely disappointing.
It really does seem avoiding any and all American services/products (to the extent possible, with exceptions where reasonable) is the only way forward.
I am increasingly coming to the conclusion that the US is a ethical, cultural and even economic dead end. Yes even economic, only a fool would believe intense corruption and broad support of criminality and corruption among the population will not have any negative effects in the future.

Wait, what the hell?
I can’t believe this, who the hell are they to decide what I should install?
They are welcome to curate their own store, but sideloading concerns only the user.
Hopefully, the EU and other jurisdictions block this.
Fucking corrupt American oligarchs.

Wow, that’s pretty crazy.

Honestly, if you are going the Linux route, you might as well get a headless Linux setup (no GUI, just command line), install qbittorrent-nox and access qbitborrent via the webUI.
You will save a massive amount of RAM, desk space and probably even CPU time.

Don’t know what country you are in, but it might be worth considering try to get the torrent without a VPN.
Chances are if it’s extremely rare/obscure stuff, it’s not going to be tracked by a copyright enforcement agency.

I was in a similar situation, to my knowledge, recheck is the only option.

It literally is a meme, an ironic one.
This is a very strong list, I mean you have jpeg, PNG and flac on the list.
But yes, .lnk has no legitimate use cases in a torrent.
