  • I installed it locally using the deb package on their GitHub. They also have apks and I believe a flatpak too (don’t quote me on that though).

The android APK is a little funky (I kept getting the notification “you’ve been invited to a room” for every message I’d receive) so I switched back to using element x for the time being, but commet is now my go to client for my laptop, as I don’t use that machine for VC anyway.

You’re right in the sense that none of it is hosted on app repositories though; they’ve still got some ways to go on that front.

  • Someone mentioned commet as a discord like matrix client the other day. I’ve trialled it using my matrix setup, and it looks and feels very clean, I definitely prefer it to element.

Unfortunately as the tale always goes, it’s not quite on par with element in features (it claims to have RTC support using livekit, but I couldn’t find the group call option), but it’s definitely one of the more interesting clients to come about recently. I really like the separation of spaces and personal chats, and the multiple accounts feature is useful from a sysadmin perspective.

Once they manage voice channels with RTC, I think matrix will finally have its discord alternative that could see some adoption with everyday users.

  • If you give a letter to a postman, and the recipient asks why you put “P.S: I love you” on an official piece of documentation, your first thought wouldn’t be “that damn postman, opening my mail to try and enhance it”.

The same is true for YouTube. People have been uploading videos for decades with them ending up on the platform the way they are uploaded, so it stands to reason that longtime users would expect this behaviour to continue, especially if there have been no Comms around any changes.

Of course Google isn’t to be trusted, and anyone trusting YouTube to be ethical clearly isn’t paying attention to anything. But that doesn’t change the fact that youtube have intentionally hidden this change from their user base. Sure, the result was public facing, but the cause was kept secret; and that’s the nuance you’re overlooking.

  • Activism like this isn’t for people on Lemmy, who have already been exposed to the likes of decentralisation, open source Vs closed source etc… its predominantly for those that still think brand name = quality.

I don’t use social media these days, but i do have inactive accounts; I’m considering logging in and changing the pictures to clippy. It may have absolutely no effect, or it may be the 16th clippy PFP that someone sees, which may then prompt them to ask why everyone is changing their photo to clippy.

So whilst it won’t change anything in a large way, it can act as the catalyst for those who are still unaware to try and educate themselves on the subject, and hopefully lead to them leaving Microsoft products altogether like you’ve alluded to.

For example; I’m already not using any Microsoft products, so continuing to not use their products is less impactful than by changing my mainstream photos to clippy, even if it has no effect.

We can try to tell people about the evils of microsoft until we’re blue in the face… But if they “research” it themselves, it’s far more likely to stick.

Oh I see what you’re talking about. I thought you meant the link to fffmpegs forgejo site rather than the crosspost link.

Maybe it’s just the app I’m using, but sync was able to redirect me to the Open source community that this was originally posted to. (It’s hosted on lemmy.ml, but the poster is from Lemmy.zip, which is why the post link is Lemmy.zip).

When I open via browser though, I see the OSA block that you’re referring too… An interesting difference for sure. But I suppose if all posts from lemmy.zip were blocked, we wouldn’t be seeing this one either, so I’m guessing it’s just post shares that won’t work?

  • I’m glad to hear it. I am doing everything in my capacity to help with the repatriation of the empire’s illegally pillaged artifacts.

Admittedly that’s not a great deal currently though, most of my spare time is spent helping out at the local food bank, as there’s a bit of a malnourishment crisis going on in the UK ATM (as I’m sure there is most places tbh. The disparity between rich and poor seems to have grown exponentially since covid and the job market is only compounding the issue).

You guys should have ceded from the crown eons ago; if I had the choice I certainly would. You won’t find much love for the monarchy among the working class in Britain.

  • I can’t speak for the actions of people that died a century before I existed of course, but I can near enough guarantee that neither I, nor any of my fellow working class citizens have caused any famines in India. (I say near enough; because for all I know there could be some obscure despot running around who just so happens to be from a working class village in Scotland or some shit).

I wholeheartedly agree with the last statement. It is a human condition ultimately; we’re seeing the same situation out in the states, where a lot of immigrant families voted in favour of tighter immigration (the “fuck you I got mine” mentality). I suppose you could argue it’s due to Americanisation of the people who have migrated, but to me it just highlights the fact that morality isn’t based on nationality. I believe brandishing any nationality/ethnicity or race as anything other than human only perpetuates ‘us and them’ mentalities, and I believe it’s by design.

Until the world wakes up and realises it’s not north Vs south or east Vs west; but rather rich Vs poor, nothing will change.
