Lol no these companies are now building their own fossil fuel plants. Mortgage the future is always the plan. I’ve been in the power industry for 15 years and only since AI have I been asked to work on fossil fuel construction projects rather than decommission projects

Neurons are much more sophisticated than transistors. A neuron can have multiple connections and can provide a range of values. Digital logic is all yes/no. I’m not sure we even can build something that mimics a brain with current technology.

The author doesn’t disagree with you - they cite all sorts of reasons and that isn’t one of them
We should have genocided all of Germany? We should have killed the POWs? Not rendered aid to enemy casualties?
Generally the correct answer is, it’s complicated. If you’re arguing something is black and white you’re probably privileged enough to have never had to make one of these decisions yourself. Do I want ICE to exist? No. Do I want all conservatives to die? Also no. What’s more, people have all of 2 seconds to make these kinds of decisions and generally fall back on their training, which is to render aid first and figure out the rest later. Personally, I like that that’s what their instinct is, and I’m not going to give them shit for it

Yeah I think what’s missed is that there weren’t a lot of long form podcasts like that at the time. It was great to be able to hear someone like Sean Carroll come on and talk about Spacetime for 3 hours and then have Joe convince him to start his own podcast, which is still going and really dang good. Joe served as the interested but uninformed audience to just kind of keep the person talking. Not to defend what it’s become, but it wasn’t always like it is now

You’re on the internet right now. Electricity is super dangerous and we already had a safe and well regulated postal system to communicate before that. If you’re arguing that we should never innovate I think we just disagree there . The same argument could be used against a lot of things. Do I like self driving cars? Idk not particularly, I like trains and bikes. But the idea of freeing up people’s time so they can focus on worthwhile endeavors appeals to me, and it bothers me that in our society the goal isn’t to work less, but rather to work more for less. That’s the point I was trying to make, that whenever we complain about ‘lost jobs’ we should take a moment to consider how absurd it is that that’s a problem

I agree with those things, but I believe the person I was responding to was complaining about putting cab drivers out of work. I just think it’s unfortunate that we can’t simply take care of each other, that people are only valued based on what they produce, and therefore any threat to that production is viewed as negative. We’re more productive than ever and we work more than ever. Our ancestors would be baffled if they could see us

We’ve managed to create a society where people are upset about technology doing the work that people used to do. We’ve just completely lost the plot haven’t we

I think you can still draw the parallel. As in, palantir the company is a mechanism for villains to corrupt the society around them. Or something like that

What point are you trying to make here? That we should execute people based on feels rather than law? It ain’t perfect, it’s maybe not even good, but it’s logical and can be improved upon if we decide we want to. It’s the best we got

It gives the populous more ‘room’ to intercede. Basically, a normal person at a cafe feels they have some permission structure to stand up to ice, after all, the governor and the mayor told them to. So they aren’t rebelling, they are helping uphold the law. I think things like this actually goes a long way in moving the general public. At the very least it doesn’t hurt

Mate I don’t have any love for the democratic party but when one side decides to do a fascism and you call yourself a centrist then you’re enabling fascism. Or at least admitting you’d like some light fascism. You can be independent without being centrist

Omg. ‘look at all this lack of evidence!’. Shes so close

I work in consulting. I have a VPN for my company and also for each client

Every interaction I’ve ever had with police I’ve been the one attempting to de escalate. Literally 100%. What’s frustrating is you speaking calmly and clearly pisses them off even more because they feel like you’re speaking down to them. They feel like they are supposed to be the reasonable ones and you’re making them look bad. Which of course you are, because they’re not.

Yeah remember that being an inflection point where I stopped being excited about updates and started dreading them.

Honestly dude I don’t know what they are teaching in history classes these days, no one knows anything. How do they think the Hebrews fended off the hittite reptilian calvary?

I think you’re missing their point. They aren’t saying they are going to do that, or that it’s a good idea, they’re saying enough people are going to react that way for it to be a problem. It’s not good enough to be correct, you need to be convincing. Just because I can hold my nose and vote for the lesser evil doesn’t mean I’m not concerned that not everyone will.
I feel like this is a really bad idea on their part. So far they’ve only been terrorizing blue communities, now everyone is gonna get a taste. Just a litttttle but harder for people to ignore their own eyes and ears.
