Even though the AV1 spec was finalized 8 years ago, the HEVC patent mess was well known back then. I know that AOM put a lot of effort into working around patent problems so it will be interesting to see how this plays out. Google, Amazon, Netflix, Meta, Apple and the rest of AOM all have a lot on the line if the patent trolls win.

Open video and audio codecs are a direct threat to Dolby’s core business so this move isn’t surprising unfortunately.

I work in tech for a large financial company (not JP Morgan) and they’ve invested heavily in AI and expect a return. But it’s a multi-pronged approach. More offshoring. Transitioning from internally maintained platforms to external SaaS solutions. More aggressively performance managing staff out of the company including older workers like myself. Setting expectations for those who will remain that they will be expected to use AI to work much faster with smaller teams.

So AI isn’t the sole cause. But it is accelerating the trends that were already happening.

My boss, who is in the process of managing me out, told me point blank last week that they expect software engineers to use AI to work much faster with less people. That’s “the reality of the situation”.

They tried various pricing plans although I forget if they experimented with both usage based and capped plans. Anything other than unlimited did not go over well with users. I had no desire to manage a monthly cap since my own daily usage varied so much. People had also become very conditioned to having unlimited search.

It’s a tech demo at this point, not a product. Tim Cook wanted something to cement his legacy so they released it even though the technology was not at all ready yet. The potential is impressive but we’re years away.

Say what you want about Steve Jobs. But his timing during his second stint at Apple was unrivaled. He knew what to bet on and when. And he wasn’t afraid to go all in and bet the company on it.

I never said that I was surprised. I just wanted to point out that many companies like my own are already making significant changes to how they hire and fire. They need to justify their large investment in AI even though we know the tech isn’t there yet.

The obsession with replacing workers with AI isn’t going to die. It’s too late. The large financial company that I work for has been obsessively tracking hours saved in developer time with GitHub Copilot. I’m an older developer and I was warned this week that my job will be eliminated soon.

Just block the user. I like Bluesky but I’m tired of the constant posts too.

The relentless pursuit of capitalism and reduced labor costs. I still don’t think anyone knows how effective it’s going to be at this point. But companies are investing billions to find out.

It was probably incompetence more than malice but T-Mobile customer service incorrectly told me multiple times that I was not allowed to pay off my phone balance early to unlock it. I’m on US Mobile now and I’ll never go back to postpaid.

I’ve been listening to it in my car over the last few weeks. I’m really enjoying it so far.

I’m not defending Google but I think the change is just an admission that the old “Chromecast” branding is outdated. It wouldn’t surprise me if less than 5% of users still regularly cast from a desktop browser.

I don’t understand why LTT wouldn’t negotiate a settlement first with the accuser in exchange for a nondisclosure and non-disparagement agreement before releasing any statement. You could view their posturing as defiance.

Valve’s faults are very well documented but I don’t understand the ticking time bomb reference at all.

I absolutely appreciate all of Valve’s Linux efforts. Linux wouldn’t be thriving as a gaming platform without them.
