Kdenlive - Worked the best for me, but has the worst name.
Shotcut - Seems feature rich and reasonably good
Openshot - Seemed more approachable, a little less performant.
Blender - I’ve heard it includes a good video editor in there somewhere, tho I’ve never used that.
Olive - I think was another Foss video editor? But it might be discontinued. Never tried it either.
If you actually just download a .py file, you need to run it with python. Like in the example you linked, something like
python3 _filename_
(and if that’s the case, you might need to add a line at the top of the file, telling it where the interpreter is. But probably you actually want the following)
To install, you use the python installer program, pip. Something like
pip _package-name_
Before you do either, you need to install python and pip. I don’t know exactly (look for correct package names), but you need to run something like
sudo apt install python3 pip
I also sometimes consciously dislike things because of annoying ads.
But it doesn’t matter. The overall result is that now you’re aware of that brand, you have a place for it in memory. After time passes it will be The One I’ve Heard Of unless you’re dedicated to remembering to avoid it. There’s something called the Mere Exposure Effect - it mostly works and they know it. :(

I haven’t tried it. What aspects make it different from what Loops or Pixelfed are already doing?

Pretty cool projects. I played around with the Mandarin one a little. What plans do you have for these going forward?
More languages, custom vocab lists seem like they’d be good additions, but mainly I’m interested in how you plan to improve the game aspects?

Yes! It’s completely silly. A ‘poll’ designed exactly for the people that want a noai option, to be shared in places like this so those people (like me) can get the tiny satisfaction of hitting No.
They were never wondering what the result would be, they were never trying to gauge their userbase’s preferences. It’s just a page they thought people would share to spread awareness of DDG.

Oof, this still isn’t up on F-Droid or either main app store. That’s a shame, I thought this moment would be a great time for Loops to get some user base, but it seems like it’s still not ready for wider adoption.
That said, it does look a lot better now than it did a few months ago when I last tried it. Here’s hoping it picks up some momentum. I finally tried TikTok last year, and was really impressed by the breadth of videos and how quickly it was able to start showing me things I enjoyed. With the recent change in ownership, I don’t know that I’ll revisit it much if at all. Would take quite a lot to replicate even a little bit of the zeitgeist TikTok had going. But like with Lemmy and Mastodon/Bsky, I’m hoping I can do my little part by choosing where to put my attention. Just don’t know that I’m going to find much there I care to see, for now.
That’s a good question, answer is generally that it depends. Do I want to spend more money on stuff? Of course not.
But if the price is the same or negligibly more, then I’m better off not incurring the bodily damage of consuming excess calories. The smaller the default size of the suggested meal (eg, a combo) the better, unless it hits the point where it makes me order a second meal or extra sides.
That preference reflects my own privilege, health perspective, and lack of self-control though. I know it’s a different call for everyone.
I’m actually pretty OK with this. Portion sizes were generally kinda oversized, especially for not-so-healthy fastfood.
I use Eqonomize. It’s simple and works well for my purposes.

It’s funny, I love vim and have never understood Emacs, but when setting up a shell it seems the Emacs commands felt more natural.

Concept of it sounds good. I don’t think you’re going to get a lot of love here by linking to Reddit and encouraging people to contribute there.
Have you considered aggregating and organizing this info and sharing it on a separate website? (Personally-owned) websites are underrated these days.

I get a lot of mileage out of the line editing commands. I think they are Emacs based and optional… but like Ctrl k, Ctrl u, Ctrl a.

rg and fd have been so much easier to use than the classics to me. Great replacements!
bat is another one that I think can be worth switching to, though not as essential.

Yes. But, to perhaps a lower extent, this headline is also true if you change ‘Reddit’ to ‘the internet’.

What do you use for podcasts? The software should be handling it so you don’t have to think about it much.
I’m on AntennaPod (FOSS podcast client), and looking at the Add Podcast screen, I see it does include Apple Podcasts. You can add RSS feeds for other sources, but mostly I search the name of whatever podcast I want and it finds it.

It’s at least pretty cool that the statement is true enough most of the time to be in wide use. The walled gardens continue to expand, and the situation will get worse. But by and large podcasts are pretty open and accessible in a decentralized way.
I know Spotify is grossly proprietary, but is Apple’s new service too? For a long time it seems like being on iTunes or whatever meant they also had an open RSS feed for podcasts clients?

Replacing the digraph is pretty cool. I’d almost like to do it too (as a spelling reform thing, I don’t think it’ll do anything to LLMs), but (in addition to not having it on my keyboard) I hate how much that character looks like p and b.
Think I used this for a little while. It was pretty much a slightly better Postman, back when Postman itself was less annoying.
Frustratingly, at some point I opened Insomnia and it randomly lost all my requests/history. That soured me on it. Then when I tried it again a couple years later, it had that bad ‘freemium’ feel, even if it is still FOSS.
