I’ve found it impossible to run apps from APKpure. Google Play gets in the way, stops the app from startup because “it might be malicious” and does not give you the option to run it anyway. I have sideloaded apps and run into the same problem. I’d read you can disable Google Play Services to get around it, but the apps themselves require it. These are just Japanese escape games, nothing sketchy.

I spent a few sessions in court last year and they disallow all phone use except for the attorneys and other officials.

Americans have come to think of Chinese products as bad quality because of the American companies who engage them for cheaper labor. Walmart was known to order products made to a certain spec one year, then the next year demand the company increase production, but for the same amount paid as the previous year. The Chinese company, not wanting to lose the contract, obliges, but corners have to be cut. It should be called Americanesium, not Chineseum.

Derek Guy (Die, Workwear!) posted a thread a while back (I think about 6 months ago) about how the Chinese can and do make great quality products, pointing out high quality fabrics. Give them money to buy good raw materials, give them a decent wage, and they’ll put out a good product. Honestly, they probably have a more fair work ethic than some American companies that just feed their CEOs massive salaries or are owned by private equity.

And then you have Asian Americans, who just want to be considered Americans. Probably every American born Asian has been asked at least once in their life “Where are you from?” and has their [location in the US] answer rejected with “No where are you really from?”, as if it’s impossible for an Asian to be American born - they must be foreign born and an immigrant. Asking about ethnic origin, ancestry, or even family are more semantically accurate terms that won’t make the person questioned feel like they don’t belong.

I was actually curious about this several years ago. In 2020 I started two investments, one has investment decisions made by a team of people, the other is not billed as AI but automated. I started them about the same time and with the same amount of money. 5 years later they are still nearly the same, the automated one slightly higher than the human one much of the time but not always.

If you had uBlock origin already, you may have gotten a message through Chrome that it was no longer supported, so it’s been disabled, and gives you the option to remove it. I noticed you don’t have to remove it, and it can be re-enabled. However, I need someone smarter with adblockers than I to say if this is actually helpful and not hazardous.

I’m in California where we have a grocery chain, Safeway. They’ve had a loyalty card for decades, which works great, gets you good deals, can be scanned by the checkout clerk or at self checkout. It also racks up points which can be used for discounts.

About 2 years ago I started seeing signs in the store offering even greater savings through the app. There will sometimes be 2 signs side by side for the loyalty card vs the app. The app is always a better deal.

So I downloaded the app and learned

• the app cannot scan your membership at self checkout, you have to be checked out by a clerk
• the app’s membership number is different from your loyalty card number and the two cannot be merged.
• because of that your points can’t be transferred to the app

It’s the dumbest thing ever. Why not just offer the better savings to the loyalty card? Isn’t that the whole point behind loyalty? I literally shop at Safeway less often now.

There’s 2 ways to go on it. Either not track the data, which is what they want you to do, and protest until they let you use the proper field names, or say fuck their rules, track the data anyway, and you can produce the reports you want. And you can still protest, and when you get the field names back it’s just a replace all tablename.gender with tablename.jander. Different strokes different folks
