  • You can use any filament you want, it works fine on LAN and SD-cards without online account. There was some debate on the fucked up firmware updating thing, but they did backtrack on this, no?

Sure, but your machine is also 3x the price (at least on my country).

That being said, my next printer will also be a prusa, but mostly because it’s a European company. I’m also for Foss 3dp, but I also don’t want to be caught up in misinformation - please enlighten me if there are serious issues actually happening and not just “well Bambu might do so and so in the future”.

  • I could live without banking etc. on my phone - has become a habit. Also, android auto is a must for me, unfortunately. Because of the complicated process of getting approval from governmental bodies when implementing technology for cars (safety stuff mostly) I doubt we’ll see any foss alternatives any time soon. Could be wrong - Fisker Ocean cars have a great community that mods the software, but probably wouldn’t have happened if Fisker didn’t go bankrupt.

  • Problem then becomes that banking, streaming and other apps won’t work because root == security issues (according to the companies who push towards a more closed system). Completely stupid. Like saying that having admin or root rights on your desktop poses such a huge security issue that you cannot login to your bank. Furthermore, if you do root your phone, then you should be comfortable tinkering with technology and understand the potential dangers that such an endeavour might present.

  • In order of ease of use; Nobara (Fedora based), popOS (Mint/Ubuntu based), cachyOS (Arch based, easy enough to use but might be overwhelming because of the amount of linux jargon going on) over bazzite, depending on your friend ability and wish to tinker around with his OS.

I have had problems even dragging dropping files across apps in bazzite and other immutable distros like bluefin. If your friend is interested in tinkering just a little bit then he will be be banging his head across a wall with bazzite. The community support for these relatively new immutable distros is also quite bad when it comes to edge cases.
