Yeah, I don’t think the GDP is a great defining factor of economic emergency, in that words like “recession” have to be declared before the country treats the problem seriously. Assuming that growth is going to happen forever in a finite world is naive. And there are serious problems in the economy happening despite the GDP, like increasing poverty and lack of education or healthcare.

So like, my frustration is that “recession” has to be said before the government freaks out and attempts to fix things, but things are already really bad in ways that matter far more.

I work at a university and learned yesterday that the current administration has removed the legal status of at least three of our international students…without notifying the university or the student. Just up and deleted their visas.

The government made innocent, law-abiding college students illegal for no fucking reason and didn’t tell anyone. Why do that unless you’re planning to raid their home, kidnap 18-22 year olds, and spread terror?

They are doing this all across the country. I read a Higher Ed article about it. I’m sure no university has been left untouched. Thousands of innocent people threatened with ICE raids for no goddamned reason.

I’ve heard conflicting information.

1. That a vaccine would be lifesaving and egg-saving, and it would be a great thing.
2. With a vaccine, exporting chickens/eggs to other countries will be impossible because they won’t want to import eggs/meat potentially carrying bird flu (which wouldn’t be known because the chickens wouldn’t show symptoms). So, if food-cautious countries don’t want vaccinated products because of their potential to harbor bird flu, do I want those products? Would this increase the chance for the flu to jump between species?

I am not knowledgeable enough to know which is the better way forward. Can anyone speak to this?

I wonder if the alienation of the rest of the world from the US by Trump, especially with these tariffs, was a Putin idea. Make Russia’s enemies turn against one another so they won’t band together. Pull their economies apart so that the EU won’t have armies and defense mechanisms at hand, and so that the US, Mexico, and Canada are no longer trusting each other, and so on. If all the countries don’t trust one another, they are fractured and weak, unable to stand up to Russia’s invasions.
