  • I’ve shoot dozens of deer with a 30.06, and they also don’t explode if you hit them in the neck. The round will pass through something that soft at that range without expanding or tumbling, retaining most of its energy instead of transferring it to the target - especially if you’re using an FMJ or match round that’s not designed to expand.

    It’s actually one of the reasons it’s kinda fallen out of style for hunting. Despite its muzzle energy, it’s not a particularly precise or effective as a hunting round versus a more modern cartridge. Something like a 6.5 Creedmoor will use less powder to shoot a smaller projectile more precisely and transfer more energy to the target.
