  • Windows disappearing is a hiccup while things adapt

I would argue it’s not. There’s still a lot of professional and industrial software that doesn’t run on Linux at all, even through Wine. I’ve had a glimpse into the world of industrial automation, there’s a bunch of devices that simply don’t have the drivers to run on anything but a specific (old) version of Windows. Supply chain issues would persist for decades.

  • Great assessment TBH. Iran is clearly posturing here, they haven’t won yet, even though the US did lose already.

US plutocrats don’t actually care that much whether the stock market is red or green in the short term, they will make money from it either way. I think the existing strategy of jacking up oil prices (which will impact the economy long-term) and also hitting their assets directly where possible (e.g. datacenters and refineries) will have more impact.

However, it is also possible that with some reshuffling of the demands the ceasefire might actually hold. If they allow Trump to not lose face, they could get most of their demands practically met and be the ultimate victors in this. I hope this is how it goes, otherwise we might see a worldwide famine due to fertilizer shortages by the end of this year.

  • That’s just not true. Most ATMs still run on Windows. There is a lot of industrial machinery running Windows 98 or XP to this day. A lot of POS devices too. Almost all accounting is done on Windows. The amount of chaos if it disappeared would be immense, it would probably be on the same order of magnitude as the last pandemic in terms of immediate economic impact as businesses have to manically switch to alternatives, and hundreds or thousands of people would die from financial chaos alone.

Linux is probably still worse because it would mean that more than half of smartphones are suddenly bricked, literally all of the internet just stops working, and a shitton of industrial automation stuff is gone.

  • You mean NixOS? Well, it’s definitely not as polished as pmOS, but most things do work. My gf is using it as an LTE-enabled music player, and I’m using it to ssh into my servers when I’m out and about.

It required some hackery to get GPS and the modem to work, but then it’s mostly similar to pmOS. I need to find some time to sit down, clean up my config and publish it somewhere, but life’s main quest line is preventing any side projects rn.

If you can get it for not too much money, I’d definitely spring for it. Even if you find it doesn’t suit your daily needs (it probably doesn’t just yet), it will at least be a fun toy for playing with mobile linux.

    Europe is SO small

Depends on what you count as Europe. If you include Turkey, Caucasus and/or the western part of Russia, it is fucking huge (~7500 km drive from Vorkuta to Cabo da Roca). Even if you only count EU countries, it’s still not that small (~5000 km drive north-to-south). And it’s also way denser than the US so there’s more to see overall, you can’t even explore any single country comprehensively in two weeks time (apart from microstates, of course)

  • This seems to be an opt-in, user-supplied field that apps can use to implement parental controls easier. If you’re gonna do birth dates at all, this is the way.

But IMO it should be more granular: there should be fields for WWW access, social media access, sex/nudity/violent content, and apps should respect those individually. Then parents can choose what is appropriate for their child at their development level.

Most expensive military in the world, 50x military budget of your enemy

Advantageous position of a surprise backstabbing attack during negotiations

Kills enemy head of state on the first day in his own house

    Commits uncountable war crimes

Still loses in just 3 weeks

It takes a special breed of a fucked up system to suck this bad, they can’t even do imperialist forever wars now.

The MIC is redirecting every cent it can toward profits, and so there’s nothing left for the actual military hardware. The pedophiles in charge can barely think anymore and are high on their own AI-generated propaganda. Truly the century of humiliation hallucination for the USA

I also dislike Iran’s political system, but overall the US has killed, maimed, tortured and ruined the lives of many more people then Iran’s government ever could. US is currently the most evil country on this planet, and has been in the running ever since its founding.

But even then, let’s suppose for a second that somehow Iran’s government is more evil. So what? Bombing Tehran city center, destroying mosques and museums, causing an immense ecological disaster by blowing up oil reservoirs, and double-tapping an all-girls school with tomahawks will not help the people of Iran in any way. It made their lives measurably, verifiably worse for generations.
