On the internet, no one knows you’re made of cups

My definition of refurb is anyone that actually has a store and only deals with this stuff. Examples are western digital themselves or Seagate, or shops like true base

For me hard drives could potentially be bought second hand. However, it is is not coming from someone who does this stuff at a professional level (refurbished in other words), I am not sure if I can trust it. Not because of the quality but because what was in it. Every time I get a refurb drive I have the bad habit to check what was the previous data if readable. One day I am sure I will get a nasty surprise…

I would be way more happy if they, anthropic and a few others got reduced out of existente
If you would like to go on a different route, a mini PC with opnsense is also a good choice. If you happen to have a small form factor PC somewhere that can be added a nic card to have at least 2 Ethernet ports, this would totally work

Can someone make a crying bro meme? Surely fits this (I have 0 meme skills. Just like my social skills)

Law in particular is such a gnarly subject that you really want to have someone who knows what they are saying about anything. And even then they can be wrong too

There was a piece a while ago of a guy that went to expired domains in Belgium, happened to buy an old domain from the police, and all of a sudden, started to have emails from the police with a mail server. Crazy how no one checked the domain.
Edit: found the URL here. And there was other institutions hit as well, not just police

That is not a good idea. Demanding ransom from the police never works out. Also, this gives quite a bad vibe to the dutch police as well (or this precinct in particular), since someone cannot verify where to send the files first.
You definitely have a point here. Software has to be usable if it going to have wide adoption by the people. Sometimes I see recommendations being thrown around without even thinking of it fits the needs and/or user expertise and willingness to make something work. But to be clear, just because one piece of software does not fit your needs does not mean it has to be changed to fit your needs. But if it is complex, clunkly and/or unintuitive, it is only going to be usable by a niche. And if this is the case, stop telling your grandma to spin a matrix server or xmpp and do not tell her she is an idiot because she does not have the expertise or time to make it work.

I think the food analogy is a good one here. I have debated personally a lot about this false sense of choice, when in reality you are bombarded with every psychological tactic to keep you hooked. Instagram in this sense is no different. If it lawsuit leads to somewhere, I do not know, however at some point the whole manipulative algorithms should be addressed (but by who and when are the biggest questions)

CPU overhead is quite well known and actually damages a lot the arc cards’ position on the budget class

As usual with all of these companies: only believe when you see the changes

Does anyone has an easy way to put windows 98 sounds on Linux? I would love to have it for one day (and probably revert after, just enough to deal with nostalgia)
If my phone would feel this soft carpet texture when I type or swipe i would love it for sure

I believe right now there are discussions about it on Europe to adopt more FOSS projects. The biggest problems I see happening here is who effectively maintains this, as well who gives the money (and incentives) to keep the projects alive. As of now the German government does have a program for the incentives (do not recall if they do the people’s part). Hopefully it becomes more wide and clear how this will be going forward.
Also, I do not think it would be such a small win. If anything is very significant. If you can change at that stage the tools used, eventually propagates further into the working force at some point.

I was in a very similar situation not too long ago, and my solution was also to just have a spare ssd, install windows on it, make the update and then go back. I tried to use a pe version of windows, as well a full blown windows on a USB. These solutions just didn’t work as expected, somehow the update would always fail. Windows on a proper ssd worked

You can always try second hand market if in your region is somewhat healthy. I am not entirely sure what is your use case, but for work related and studies I would advise to get a lenovo thinkpad of some kind. Durable machines overral and can be get for decent prices. Other enterprise level laptops also work
But at the same time, you are signaling that you give money to a phone where is OK to actually change what it runs without much questions (for how long? Not sure). In a way, it’s an incentive to do something positive (even if it is google).
Also as someone mentioned, getting second hand phones is possible although I understand it can be a big gamble at times
