  • That’s the only one I know that runs on linux well, but it is not popular in most of the games I mod. I would not be able to make huge Skyrim modlists on it. I could string some valheim mods on it, but that’s about it so far. I stayed on windows for so long because I needed not just the games to run, but the mods I spend a lot of time on tinkering as well. I even tried other things like pushing a payload to a Nintendo switch recently and ended up just going back to my windows install where it detected RCM right away (but the linux tools I tried didn’t).

  • the modding scene on linux and how much busywork that took, that just killed a little bit of my soul.

Care to expand on that, I’m not too used to modding games, but from the times I tried it, it’s my understanding that 99% of the times it’s just putting stuff into the right folder. If not how is it different from Windows?

Alright so modding is actually harder on linux and stupid. You should use a mod manager and not manually install your mods so you can uninstall them easier, resolve conflicts easier, manage them, etc. But the mod managers don’t all work on linux natively. So you end up trying to get steam tinker launch working (to use vortex or mo2, but the creator hates modding and will let you know) or using other random things on github (like jackify). I spent way too much time trying to get this stuff to launch and that is before you start actually modding. I ended up doing some distro hopping to get the mod managers to work and ended up on CachyOs.

  • The state I was born in has a public birth record, everything about me was already on the internet before I was an adult. I started trying to get my online info removed as an adult but it is like a game of whack-a-mole plus I get the patronizing: “all info we have is public record, we’re not doing anything wrong.” Then when I vote, the voting registry is public so even more up-to-date info of me gets leaked online 🫠 I froze my credit since I’m paranoid.

As for the government, well they already have all of my info, not much I can do about that. They’ve been spying on their citizens for decades, their surveillance expands more and more as time passes on.

  • I just read this on chapo.chat, what a rollercoaster ride! You can read the admin update here, it looks like they will keep their domain since the auction was cancelled🤞

    Admin response

you do not need to do anything

i am so sorry for the confusion, honestly the whole situation is confusing.

Years ago when we changed to hexbear.net an admin bought the domain name from a domain registrar.

That admin had things come up and wasn’t able to be as active or available.

A small issue with paying for the domain name for the year 2025 happened and the payment was 1 day late.

The domain registrar (digital landlord) took the payment and also put the domain “hexbear.net” up for auction pointing to policy that says if you are late on payment they can auction your domain name.

The admin who owns the domain escalated the issue to the top level up support for the domain registrar. During that time we tried a technical route for moving the domain name to a new registrar, which we did not expect to work. The technical route had a 5 day delay on finding out if it worked or not, during that time is when we set up the vote for what name the community would want in the event we lost hexbear.net

At this moment we still do not know if we have it or not so we are continuing with moving towards hexbear.chat but think that we might have mitigated the worst case scenario with a malicious person getting the hexbear.net domain through the aforementioned technical route.

We are currently working on an updated post to give all the info we have at this time.

    j_s bidder mystery possibly solved

Glad it’s resolved: If anyone is curious on the behind-the-scenes the j_s bidder was planning to return the domain but maybe not in the best way. They found a bug in Sav’s site that allowed them to bid without authorizations being placed, and on another account they managed to “win an auction” for low dollar value domain AND transferred it out somehow. Maybe they noticed, might be why their auction interface was in maintenance mode immediately as this was going on (archive from 19 Feb 2025 10:26:35 UTC https://archive.is/qsVg6 ).

  • Yep, google will be able to read your notifications. Which is why I only let things I don’t care about google seeing use the sandboxed google play. Things like games, etc. I use Proton but no notifications for email (and yes I know about the CEO and Trump). That’s more invasive so I just manually check my Proton inbox. You get used to workarounds. I also use a bogus gmail account not tied to me, fake name, dob, phone number, etc. I used juicySMS for it.

  • Things don’t crash on me. But bank apps may not work, they usually use play protect and apps with that may not work. Also you will not have root access, it has to do with security but certain apps like titanium backup need root to work. I’ve heard seed vault (built-in backup) isn’t that great but I haven’t used it. I like GrapheneOS, the only annoying thing for me is the lack of notifications for certain apps. That’s pretty much how it goes when you don’t use google on your phone. My workaround is using a separate work profile that has sandboxed google play for apps that I need notifications for.
