  • What’s preventing you from simply renouncing it then?

I’m familiar with a handful of people who have done so, mostly due to the tax burden that this country places on them. The fee is a bit hefty, but it was better than continuing to pay taxes towards a country you don’t even live in.

  • What discussions happen on discord?

You ever have an issue with anything and you find the answer on some random reddit discussion that ends up in your search results when you’re looking around?

Discord isn’t really like the older methods of chatting, where people used platforms to chat for the sake of chatting. Entire communities from forums decided to just upend everything and move into discord. Niche software and other files are often shared among discord communities, or assistance for said files and programs is offered only through specific discord communities.

The platform is still better than anything we had back in the day, it’s just that for some reason people have decided that everything needs to be stored in there.

Anyway, I don’t see much changing. People will probably attempt to take this culture onto whatever new platform they move onto.

  • Civil War suggests there will be organized resistance.

This is true, but there’s more to it than that.

Around the time I first joined Lemmy a user on here recommended a book to me titled “How Civil Wars Start: And How to Stop Them.”

I’m oversimplifying the contents, but civil wars tend to be more common in countries that are in a status that is between autocracy and democracy. Overwhelming authoritarianism and overwhelming democracy are stabilizers that make it difficult for infighting that contests the leadership of the country.

There’s a lot of ways to interpret the current atmosphere and where we are on that scale. I don’t feel confident in my ability to judge it.

  • Is this case being prosecuted by the actual AG?

There’s two cases, and one technically is. One of his cases is at the state level, and the other is at the federal. The AG isn’t directly involved, but they do oversee the one at the federal level.

In theory as someone else said federal cases belong to “everyone” or the country, the United States. Of course, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t biases or politics being involved.

Anyways, the AG and DOJs involvement doesn’t amount to as much as people let on. The case was filed under the last administrations DOJ and there’s not much a change in leadership there can change regarding the case. They can change assigned personnel or change the overall approach, such as sentencing or the death penalty, but that’s about it. Bondi did make the push for the death penalty, publicly even, and they’re taking advantage of that, but it’s not entirely unlikely that it wouldn’t have been requested regardless of who was at the helm.

  • I’m more surprised it took them this long to realize that they can just do this and his cult will believe it.

Not sure if they’ll even list anyone that’s actually guilty, regardless of party loyalties. This is just an assumption, but I assume that some of these people visited the island at the same time as the others. In that case outing even a single individual could lead to them inevitably naming and shaming others that have been too. They wouldn’t risk that.

  • I don’t quite understand the outrage in the thread. I’ve been looking through the comments, trying to see if this ever went beyond gossip and I can’t find anything.

From my understanding the app was intended to be a safe space for women to discuss dating. Relaying information about dangerous individuals, or people who cheat. I can imagine that things might have gotten slightly out of hand in regards to anonymous gossip, but is that anything compared to being doxxed? Besides, women, and men have been gossiping behind each others backs for as long as humans have existed. An anonymous app makes it significantly worse certainly, but it is what it is. This behavior is always going to exist for better or for worse. For example, people already discuss this on sites like fetlife since the risk of ending up with someone who wants to batter you for the sake of battering you is somewhat high there.

Surely we can have some sympathy for people who have had their identifications doxxed by 4chan who haven’t done anything worse than a bit of toxic gossip at most?
