It’s not the people with the money deciding wherever the fix is made public or not, but the person that developed the fix since they are the ones that will have to weather the legal repercussions. I think if you developed a fix and released it publicly, you could also collect the bounty.

Yeah, I doubt it. People talk a big game, but at almost every opportunity they will chose convenience and price despite what they say, and there are few things more convenient than wealth and the ability to use money to make problems go away.

Realistically will either of the above matter? Probably not. For it to be effective a large portion of the population would need to care about their privacy, or even their principles above convenience, which they usually don’t. However, I can’t control what other people do, only what I do. So in this kind of situation I do my best to be a good example of the behavior I would like to see from others and do my best to not contribute to the Prisoner’s Dilemma or Tragedy of the Commons.

Are either of those accessible from the GUI in a fresh default install? I know exactly where in Windows to find that control panel (granted they make it more convoluted to get to in every successive version), but I don’t know how I would do it with just what the OS provides in either Mint or Kubuntu (the two distros I have the most familiarity with).
