  • Two lawyers got in a pissing contest on developing the land they owned.

My great-grandfather apparently had a story about it. It involved lots of booze, a prostitute, and a horse. Then again most of his stories had the same theme so the truthfulness of the story is up for debate.

Missoula is a bit odd on a few things. I attended Hellgate elementary - yes that’s the name of the school.

  • The OS desktop environment has stagnated over the past 15 years.

Many businesses have transitioned from a 3-4 year rotation on desktops/laptops to every 5-6 years today. Hell my work laptop is 6 years old and I don’t forsee replacing it for another 3-4 years. For work functions there is no significant improvement to upgrading more frequently today.

So if they launched W12 next year, widespread adoption will likely not occur until 2032-2033 or at the Win11 EOL whichever comes first.

The developers today are working on a system that will not become mainstream for 8+ years. They want to launch in the next 2 years knowing it will not be adopted for years.

They ignoring the reality of today’s market and building to meet the latest fads. It’s Windows 8 all over again.

  • The local shops in my area are making a huge comeback. Starbucks killed most of the local little independents around 15 years ago. They did it by providing consistent quality and reasonable pay to their employees.

Recently local chains/independents have made a resurgence. Their secret, heavily recruiting the experienced trained Starbucks employees full-time at better pay and benefits.

Starbucks traffic is plummetting while local companies are expanding rapidly.

This morning I went to the bank and gas station right next to a Starbucks that has been there for 20 years and a 4 month old local chain. Starbucks had one person in the drive-through and maybe half a dozen people in the store. The local chain had a 10 car line and a full parking lot.

  • Its not that most people are shit drivers, if you could dissect the numbers further you would see a minority of drivers involved in the majority of crashes. I know people who have been in 3 crashes in the past year and have driven under 15K miles.

If you look at countries where the driver training is more vigorous and the punishment for bad driving more severe, you’ll see that accident rate plummet further. This is especially true of traffic fatalities

I have driven more than a million miles in North america over the past 20 years and been rear-ended once due to the shit driver behind me failing to stop. I have zero accidents that are my fault in my driving history. I credit it to going through the British driver training system. It was an absolute nightmare to pass but it made me a much better driver.
