“Falsehood flies, and truth comes limping after it, so that when men come to be undeceived, it is too late; the jest is over, and the tale hath had its effect: […] like a physician, who hath found out an infallible medicine, after the patient is dead.” —Jonathan Swift

  • “Gay pioneer” sounds like an amazing Halloween costume.

Can’t say I entirely liked Frank; anti-trans, pro-Israel, pro-online gambling. I respect that he advanced gay rights, medical cannabis legalization, demilitarization, and some (relatively milquetoast) environmentalism.

Edit: I forgot to mention pro-choice. All-in-all not bad, but just leaves a sour taste.

Edit 2: Going to his Wikipedia article now to refresh my memory, it seems:

However in May 2026, shortly before his death, Frank reversed his position and criticized the leadership of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He believed that the U.S. should end their weapons sales to Israel as long as Netanyahu does not “relieve Palestinian suffering” and expressed support to Netanyahu’s opposition.

He was clearly one of the better ones, to whatever extent that means anything when speaking about the US Congress. I think his anti-trans actions and statements have sort of just polluted my view of him.

  • Firefox has begun the AI enshitification process

Dude, it’s like five things – one of which is just translations that can be performed locally, and another of which is an alt text accessibility option – with an obvious universal kill switch (and of course individualized ones). Calm your tits. Chill your balls. I don’t use LLMs at all except for translations, and I still think the whinging over this is completely overblown.

“Begun” implies a slippery slope of much more, and that just doesn’t seem to be the case.

  • None.

ALL the bullshit we deal with today can pretty much be directly attributed to this ass clown.

Is wishful, conspiratorial thinking designed to simplify a staggeringly complex and scary world into one where a great, singularizing evil has caused all of this.

I’m probably going to have to keep bringing this up given Lemmy’s appalling tendency toward unsubstantiated “contradictory evidence is only evidence of how deep the conspiracy goes!!” thinking (see: this one, where evidence that it’s Epstein’s writing is actually evidence that they trained an LLM on Epstein’s writing, roping anti-AI into it too*), but Dan Olson’s video essay “In Search Of A Flat Earth” discusses this kind of simplifying thinking to a T when describing QAnon.

There was a now-removed post earlier on /c/politics with like a 45:5 upvote ratio from some random dipshit’s Substack claiming (with zero real substance or qualifications) to analyze the note and conclude that it was written by Donald Trump himself. The average Lemmy user, like most people on social media, are intellectually lazy idiots.

    * Edit: I just want to point out that by 2019 standards, training and using an LLM to convincingly fake a suicide note from a specific person by compiling their previous correspondences and shoving them into an LSTM or a relatively new transformer model would be vastly more difficult (intellectually and effort-wise, and probably with worse results) than just fucking reading some of the previous correspondences and deliberately throwing in some writing quirks. That may not be what happened, but if you’re going to believe it wasn’t Epstein’s writing, don’t be a total fucking moron about it: at least believe something vaguely plausible.

  • Hard disagree. The fact it’s an art exhibit is the point, not a defect. The article summarizes it better than I could:

The library—essentially, the Epstein files in analog—is intended to represent the staggering scale of Epstein’s crimes, as well as the impunity with which he carried them out. More than 17,000 pounds [7700 kg] of evidence is on display at the library, says David Garrett, the main organizer of the exhibit at the Institute for Primary Facts, a nonprofit intended to promote transparency and accountability in the US government.

If you went into this expecting it to be about accessibility, that’s not the library’s fault. The fact that it’s giving these a physical form is the point, because it’s 1) giving a visceral representation of how immense the scale of these crimes were and 2) showing that this is 100% out in the open despite essentially fuck-all being done about it. It is a monument to injustice.

It’s a statement. Art exhibits make statements. And honestly, reading about this one shook me a little, reminding me after half a decade how profoundly abnormal all of this really is. It’s a way for the audience to ground themselves, and it achieves that magnificently – I’m sure even better in person.

  • And you can’t dismiss the accumulated experimental data

I don’t. I actually read psychology meta-analyses about accumulated experimental data, and relatively few individual papers are using terms like “superego” (and I can find two meta-analyses, one of which is just describing psychoanalysis). Even then, it’s within a modern framework of psychoanalysis which has evolved over 100 years, not regurgitating what they think “Freud would say”. You’re citing Freud specifically by literally saying “here’s what Freud would say”, so don’t strawman me by pretending I’m anti-experimental data or whatever the fuck.

Psychology isn’t a question of physics.

I’m not saying it is; it’s an emergent phenomenon in a chain thereof. I’m saying it is a science that deserves to actually be taken seriously, not mired in “here’s what someone who barely understood the field as we understand it today would’ve said” like that holds literally any weight about why people behave the way they do.

  • I’m neither stoned nor a teenager

“financial acumen of a stoned teenager”. Can you just not read either, or do you not understand this is that thing you learn about in 3rd grade called a “comparison” and not literally calling you a stoned teenager? I’m getting concerned here.

You also clearly have no idea what an “ad hominim [sic]” is either.

make no pretense to be some financial guru.

You certainly considered yourself well-informed enough to say the person BBC News quoted had no fucking idea what they were talking about without doing the most basic research first.
