Ive used OsmAnd+ for years & I still find it confusing to find specific settings! Thankfully OsmAnd settings can be backed up & exported/imported.

That said, several times in new cities in both in my home country & abroad late in the day, it’s found us places to eat, toilets, late night supermarkets etc etc. I was grateful to the mappers & I vowed to do the same in my home city suburb to help any fellow visitors who find themselves here. I kept my word & mapped it extensively though I’ll not reveal where.

Several months ago we visited a European capital for a city break, the public transit navigation in OsmAnd was fantastic. The offline wiki articles are amazing when visiting new places.

Top tip: utilise the “Quick Action” shortcut button. Add fuel, parking, parking location, wiki & “show nearest POI”. You can toggle them on/off in an instant when needed

Bingo. Self hosting is my first exposure to Linux, I’m still a novice. Just migrated a couple of my Pi servers onto a Beelink EQ14. After a bit of reading i decided to install Ubuntu server on it purely because I’m more likely to glean answers from online forums & the like when inevitability hit a barrier.

I’m highly likely to dual boot my laptop/switch to linux Mint soon too

For me not at all. I’m old enough to research & shop for what I need rather than impulse buy. Tech wise I dont very rarely see any ads at all thanks to strong ad blocking & general privacy consciousness. I try to stick to open source only & fediverse is the only social media I use. For YouTube I never sign in to so I’m not affected by the algorithm & never see ads on it ever (channels I like are in a Joplin note synced between devices). Broadcast TV is recorded via HTPC & ads stripped before episodes are fed into Jellyfin.

I dont “get” influencers. Even back in the day I used to ask why celebrities always put their name to perfume/aftershave as I’d only buy what I liked the smell of regardless of the brand/name.

Yeah, I know I’m an outlier, even my mates take the piss.

I share a similar stance on general street surveillance by the likes of Ring. But on the flip side I understand that people may want to extend the scope of security cameras onto the street due to vehicle vandalism for example, so I make sure to smile my sweet smile when I notice them.

I’m planning to go Graphene but realistically until a solid third option such as Linux phone is able to break the duopoly I dont think we can do much as I doubt devs will update or release many apps with little take up. Probably 90 - 95% of apps on my phone are FOSS derived from outside Play store.

This is only the start I’m afraid. “Big tech” has far, far too much leverage. Google are effectively censoring apps, they will no doubt cave in to any government asking who has (or hasnt) installed a particular app that at some future date is deemed unwelcome. Between this & ill conceived online ID schemes about to be forced upon populations, various minorities are about to be marginalised even further.

I finally got round to buying the Beelink EQ14 I’d promised myself. Sips electricity & handles 4k content. Can’t comment re usage as I havent got round to setting it up yet. I believe it shipped with Win11 but I’ll be putting linux on it

You can’t always simply VPN around it. I applied for a job via one of the popular job sites. Tried to log back in to the job site a week later only to to find my account had been blocked until I provide proof of ID to a US based third party company …I’m in Europe. Spoiler alert: I did not provide proof of ID & so have no idea whether or not I was a suitable applicant for the job.

Guess i won’t be job hunting through that site again. The whole thing is farcical.

I’m anti enshittification & pro digital privacy. A few years back when Evernote started restricting their service & a password manager I’d paid for multiple users for fucked me over it dawned on me that “Big Tech” did not have my best interests at heart. Since that Eureka moment I formed an interest in FOSS & ive not looked back.

I’m not in IT, 100% self taught. Started with Nextcloud with NGINX. I expose as little as possible, the rest is local only though ive set up Wireguard for external access.

I self host mostly what everyone else does: Nextcloud, Joplin, Paperless, Immich etc etc. Special shoutout to Homebox which ive found extremely useful when boxing up & organising our roof space & garage. I like to use Docker containers.

Its become a bit of a hobby & the path led me to the Fediverse. The next step is likely switching fully to Linux

I’m not an “imagephile”, my eyes can tell the difference between 4k & 1080p but for a 45 min TV show I couldn’t care less if its in standard def.

We have an HTPC handling all media including TV recrdings so I took a USB with a few media files of differing qualities & tested them on TV’s in the store - no way I’m buying a TV without seeing how it handles everyday stuff that isnt the ridiculous over bright awful motion smoothed in store demo scenes.

I’d never use the “smart” features of a TV, that thing is never going online.

Last 3 TV’s have been Panasonic. One of them was a lower priced set but still fantastic picture. Not the best UI & to be honest a nightmare menu system but excellent panels & no ads or BS in the UI.

The way the tech overlords are heading I’m not looking forward to replacing our set when it eventually needs it

I use Keepass but I recommended Bitwarden to less nerdy family members as it syncs out of the box & does what they need it to do. Sync is simple enough to set up with Keepass & the big plus for me is that it allows storage of files/documents. Last time I checked this was a limited/paid feature on Bitwarden

I bought an i7 NUC to use as HTPC some years ago. It has W10 IoT on it. Handles Dolby Atmos like a charm & 4K to a degree (YouTube. Last time i checked, Windows still liked to give 4K media files a purple hue)

Crap, I literally just bought a GL.iNet GL-MT600 Flint 2 which runs GL.iNet skin over OpenWrt & it has an option in its settings to switch direcrly to OpenWRT if you prefer, or you can also flash OpenWRT onto it yourself too.

You made me do it, ive ordered one. Having spent money I guess that means we’re all in on Jellyfin now …but if its no good I’ll be sending the boys round for a full refund lol.

Thanks for the info, I’ll look a little deeper into the live TV side of Jellyfin. Ive not heard of FLIRC USB before. Very interesting, I’d love to know how that goes, thank you

I’ve liked the sound of Plex forever but after it taking years for the wife to finally be comfortable finding her way around Kodi I couldn’t really try it.

Just last week I fancied a tinker & I’d heard Plex has potentially begun to enshittify so I ended up putting Jellyfin on our htpc just to test it. As well as all the usual groups, it was simple to create additional collections for stuff only the wife wants to see rather than things we’ll watch together. Within a day or so she’s already flying round it so we’ve pretty much moved to Jellyfin. It doesnt seem to like IR remote control like Kodi does which is a shame & I’m struggling a little with the live TV aspect which was also very straightforward on Kodi but I havent looked too closely into it yet.

Overall very impressed with Jellyfin.
