  • I canceled my Netflix when they did the account sharing shenanigans, and filled out the exit survey explaining why. I had only kept my Netflix because my parents watched it, then they made it so hard to add a family member addon account I said fuck it and canceled everything.

My parents signed up for their own account, so Netflix didn’t lose total count, but they lost the extra subscriber that was the whole point. I know I am an edge case in not just complaining while taking it, but there is always hope.

  • My issue has been with #1 on your cheat sheet. My first modern (post 2014) migration attempt was with Manjaro, but every time I would install updates it would break secure boot. Then 2 weeks ago it just flat out killed grub.

I decided to take the advice of many people on the Linux side of Lemmy and nuked Manjaro in favor of CachyOS. I like it quite a bit more than Manjaro, and limine kicks grub’s ass, but I keep running into more limitations with the package manager. I look for windows software alternatives, find they should be available on the AUR, but then have problems getting an installation.

There is a lack of good documentation for using AUR on Cachy, and things aren’t intuitive for a long time Windows power user. That doesn’t even get into flat pack or AppImage. It’s a very steep learning curve.

  • It’s almost like the Bible is actually a collection of separate books written by a bunch of random people with wildly different ideas and perspectives over hundreds or thousands of years, and not a single coherent document written by a single omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent entity.

  • While you make great points, I believe the previous poster was probably complaining that those people who are in it just for the community are still (by and large) voting and supporting keeping their community on a local and national stage. If you vote in Christian nationalists or support “Christian” laws because your church is advocating for them, it doesn’t matter if you personally just like the music and church picnics. The same goes for tacit upholding of Sharia Law by social Muslims.

It is incredibly hard to be a social Christian or Muslim without a belief that even if they aren’t 100% convinced about God, their book is better than the alternatives. They are (again slightly generalizing) in support of the good aspects like “love thy neighbor” and subconsciously give weight to their book overall.

Those who have fully deconstructed or were only ever religious by outward appearance or for protection from a Christian or Muslim society shouldn’t really be lumped in as a Christian or Muslim.

  • I don’t mind that ICE is detaining legal immigrants and citizens in violent raids. It’s the people overstaying their visas and jumping the border that I’m more concerned about.

Both things can be true, this is not a zero sum between open borders and masked ICE agents abducting people.

I sincerely wish all the white collar crime and shit would get more press, especially since wage theft surpasses property crime every year. I won’t stop caring about property crime because there are bigger fish out there.

I heartily disagree with how ICE is currently operating and how legal status is being removed from people to get more “low hanging fruit” to inflate numbers. Obama managed to deport millions of illegal immigrants without the theatrics, or destruction of reputation for the department so we know it can be done.

This doesn’t mean that I cannot or should not also be concerned about illegal immigration or that I should support jumping the border or overstaying visas.

  • Who cares how they get here? They came seeking a better life. I would rather have more people like that, than elitist pigs who feel entitled to America, and we should all get their permission to live our lives.

No one is entitled to go anywhere they want whenever they want, anywhere on earth. Why would or should the United States be any different? The only people entitled to any country are the citizens of that country.

The reason someone would care about this is because society is maintained by rule of law.

Another reason is that we do not live in a post scarcity utopia, and resources are not unlimited.

I know it’s not the same, but do you support China sending immigrants to Tibet and annexing the country? How about the rest of their neighbors and the South China Sea? What about Russia doing the same in Eastern Ukraine and Crimea?

If national autonomy is something to be respected then border laws and immigration laws have to be as well. If you only agree with those things only for non-wealthy countries like the US and EU members, which I suspect might be the case, I would call that biased and hypocritical.

  • My work 2FA is physical token based, it is my personal 2FA that causing me problems. Email and text authentication is insecure enough that I try and use a software authenticator whenever possible.

Great point about the work phone. I don’t want a work phone as I don’t have any desire to be reachable 24/7 outside of the rotating week I’m on call, but if I was expected to have email and Teams and everything on my phone I would definitely require one. Thankfully my work texts are all for team updates, heads up about issues, scheduling matters, etc, but I still consider those to be important while not riding to a separate work phone
