Because the reality right now is our system is fundamentally broken, and running as an independent is political suicide due to how the platform works and how people who don’t pay attention to politics tend to vote.

I’m definitely an idealist, but over the last few years have to admit that reality doesn’t match what if love to see and we have to let individuals in positions to push change work from within the system sometimes.

Our small friend group server if about 50 people spread across the country immediately started talking about alternatives. People are sick of the constant enshitification. They even brought up wanting one of us to self host whatever we move to so we can prevent this shit.

They’re mostly non-tech folks too, they just put up with my open source/privacy convos occasionally 😁

There’s a lot of VR chat communities that heavily self moderate that crap out so adults can actually enjoy games/social instances. This approach created a whooooole lotta Wild West space full of every IP stealing debauchery you can imagine, but like the early Internet also allowed for a ton of creativity and fun. Meta’s approach was to try to simply not allow anything that would be inappropriate for anyone ever to sanitize for corporate sponsors, leading to a sterile and soulless waste of time.

Utterly shocked which one has regular users creating and exploring.

So far in my friend group it’s just CoD, Destiny…forget the others. I don’t play those but literally every game I do wanna play just works for the last few years. 🤷‍♂️

You don’t need to build out a giant shack with a tower and 1kW of transmit to get on the air and hit decent ranges! There’s a ton of 5-10W pocket sized radios that’ll give you surprisingly great results with just a wire thrown up a tree branch, some under $40 if you wanna learn the dit-dahs. The equipment is way less important than how you set it up, and anything is better than nothing. Get on the air and have fun!

The only reason I still have Android is work apps in required to have that won’t work properly without the Play Store. I guess I could carry two phones but I am definitely not that guy.
