Search engines should not use locational data including IP address to provide “more relevant” results. Checking for restaurants or weather forecast? You should have to manually add the relevant search terms. Want results in a specific language? You should have to manually apply this filter.

Convenience is not worth the potential harm of locationally biased search results.

For example, where I live is like White Nationalist Central Station. My search results are thus far more likely to net me results with a pro-US/nationalist skew, thus potentially entrenching or normalizing harmful beliefs.

Whenever I’ve tried bringing this up with Techlords, I get a feeble, “B-but then you couldn’t say ‘restaurants near me’ UnU” and like … good? It’s not like it’s hard to type city and state in the search field.

I’ve never found a search engine that even has this as an option. Even Sear XNG instances net results that are clearly aligned with the location of the instances server.

A Kagi dev even lied to me when I was looking into that as an alternative, saying they don’t use location, when it’s pretty easy to determine that they do.

I also don’t want a “good” algorithm. I also don’t want to see big corporate sites prioritized either. If some backwoods nobody has a site that’s more relevant, show it to me. I feel like pre-Google search engines were better, but that’s another vent for another day.

Also, people vastly overestimate how many people are actually going to read an argument between two online people. Only the most chronically online of redditors read that shit. Most people find it very off-putting, and you actually risk losing credibility if you continue to engage. (Said as someone who has very much and repeatedly made the error of continuing to engage.)

In that case, it’s better to just make a top-level comment that’s far more likely to be read than a response 4 replies deep in an insufferable debate. You don’t continue the chess game for the sake of spectators once the pigeon has shat all over the board and knocked the pieces on the ground repeatedly. They’re just wasting your time at that point, which for most of them is their only goal in the first place.

Maybe we’ll even bring a few other illegitimate colonizer states like Israel down with us.

The only thing I have trouble with sometimes is watching videos YouTube has flagged as age-restricted videos or whatever. I have to click “watch in browser” and open them in Firefox while signed in. But I rarely encounter this.

I always like seeing the details, and I can’t imaging looking at a map and up not being north. It would be like reading a book turned sideways – hypothetically I could do it, but it would require far more brainpower to interpret than it’s worth. I do like my location kept as the centerpoint though. That’s really nice, but apparently hard to implement. The “re-center” feature on Google Maps is my friend.

Oh, and I go back and forth between Sear XNG and Startpage for search engine. I know Startpage is Bad, but there’s no search engine in existence that really makes me happy.
