I actually think the young crowd at MS would resist this. This looks much more like a top-down decision from marketing overruling engineering.

First, its results are often simply wrong, so that’s no good. Second, the more people use the AI summaries, the easier it’ll be for the AI companies to subtly influence the results in their advantage. Think of advertising or propaganda.

This is already happening btw, and the reason Musk created Grokipedia. Grok (and even other llm’s!) already use it as a “trusted source”, which it is anything but.

You can set up any AI assistant that way with custom instructions. I always do, and I require it to clearly separate facts with sources from hearsay or opinion.

Man, it would be so easy to show proof of this if it happened.

But Musk paying millions for votes (in a “lottery”) is a-ok though.

Consumers are what, less than 10% of MS’s revenue? Most of their income is from cloud (Azure, O365) so they can afford to treat their consumer customers like trash. They don’t give a shit about your 50-150 bucks for a win license because it’s peanuts to them.

The only viable option for consumers is to massively ditch MS products altogether and migrate to alternatives, which used to be in short supply but luckily aren’t anymore.
