This. I have opinions on waste management, please indulge a little rant, if you will?

In my city they also now have us pay for the privilege of dumping residual waste. It’s worth noting that residual residential waste is stuffed into a silo - the users bring it to a collection point, and open it with an RFID key card. You’re sent a bill for each time this is opened.

It’s also worth noting that the plastic bin, if it looks like they can’t sort it, they will toss it in general waste.

These factors combine into a situation where:

• Tossing things in the recycling bin has it end up in gen waste anyway
• It’s cheaper for the end user to dump their residual waste inappropriately, either by stuffing it into recycling despite not going there, or by dumping it in the bushes somewhere

Imo, fixes would include the following:

• At the very least, using the general waste silo should not come with extra costs
• Recyclables and residual waste should be merged into a single waste flow, which is to be recycled in general.
• We should make work of actual plastic recycling at a commercial scale.

I’m currently still locked in due to some magnitude of network effect. Let’s just say that I’m looking forward to more news about this program’s development with great interest.

I also heard a claim that such patterns can (marginally) discourage graffiti of the seats. And if branding is a thing you care about, they can reflect some parts of that. If you want the most extensive, expansive, awesome emergent story base building game out there, there’s of course Dwarf Fortress. You can download it right off the devs, where it’s free but takes a PhD to begin to make sense of the UI. Or you can buy it on Steam, where it will cost you a little bit, but thanks to massive UI improvements, it’s actually playable by regular people.

I once saw a video report on bullshit jobs, where they also interviewed a researcher into how much value is gained or destroyed by various professions.

They said that for every £1 (the researchers worked in the UK) given to marketing executives, that society suffered £11 in lost value.

There’s a city in France - Toulouse, IIRC EDIT: Correction: it is Grenoble - where the mayor ran on a promise that “if you elect me, I’ll remove all the billboards.” Turns out that was really popular, so now that city does not have any billboards.
