I would personally like to just go back to calling it installing, but I doubt that is even less likely than getting back “-lications” to my programs (just a dumb joke about how applications slowly became apps).

I hopped around a little but settled into Debian a long, long time ago. My son loves Arch, I like my stuff to be a bit more stable and don’t have the time to update between commands all the time (its a joke but has a little truth to it).
Been using them for a hot minute, been rocking one flavor of the Linux kernel on my phone since the release of the Motorola Droid back in like 2009-2010.
I’ve had the play store install, remove, and modify installed applications without so much as a hint they were doing it, the “Play Store” does what would be considered “sideloading” applications (i. e. a third party app managing your applications from a location other than the package manager), feeding an apk to a package manager would just be “installing” an application like it always has been.
By co-opting the term to be something bad, they are trying to make it seem like they are the only safe source for applications (even though the Google-managed stores have just as much malware as WinMX did 20+ years ago).
I’ll stick with my pfsense… Just rebuilt it yesterday to upgrade it a bit.
I’m so glad I don’t ‘sideload’ anything, never learned how. I have been installing software since the 90s though and it’s pretty much the same as always.
Joke aside, it really seems more like ‘sideloading’ when you go to a store, to ask it to install something on your phone instead of just installing it directly on the device.
I’m nearing two years into using it as my daily driver and I would 100% not want to go back. Graphene does everything I need.
I haven’t used it in the past few months, I’ll definitely give it another try though.
Edit: Oh, yeah this is a bit different. I like the new prompt asking if it’s extended or desktop. I will definitely have to play with it a bit more, I had tossed it to the back of my brain as a ‘well it exists’ feature.
It works okay, but not great for me. I toss my phone on one of my old laptops docking station at work, but some apps like to force a shit resolution. It is pretty neat having them in moveable windows though.
Personally when I need something and have seen an ad for a product that fits the need, I’ll buy it. If I’ve seen the ad so much that it’s seared into my brain, I search for the product and buy the ripoff version of it (when possible), or I DIY it.

I suppose the older I get the more I can get behind this, similar to interlock devices for people that can’t control their drinking, I would imagine the offender would have to pay for it or lose their license. I know it seems crazy to force people to stay within the speed limit, but fining and tickets don’t work for some people.
Moving to the cloud isn’t going to solve your uptime issues, it’s still hosted on a server, just now you can’t physically touch it. Please bring critical stuff back in house so we can maintain it and know why its down.

Agreed! I stayed with Plex for a long time because Jellyfin had a rough time with live TV (antenna) and I already had a PlexPass because of a sale a long time ago. Now Plex is only still running because I love Plexamp.

I think they may have meant it like that, email does not support PGP out of the box, it is just the medium the data is using. In the same way you can send data via SMS that is encrypted when it leaves one device and decryped when it reaches its destination (unless the recipient doesn’t have a way to decrypt it, which I think is both of your points).
That’s why permissions are important, so many people want full control of everything then seem to forget when they launch a program, it runs with their permissions. If I want to wipe out everything on a drive I have to elevate my permissions to a level with rights for that, running a program with the rights to wipe their data was definitely a choice.
I’d argue that I bought the car, if they are maintaining a cellular connection to the vehicle to collect telemetry data, I should be allowed to access it as well (I own the car), alternatively they could let me pay for the data connection and not collect stuff.
I would put that more on the ad networks, if the ads were related to the article, it may generate a few more clicks. The ads are completely random and built off a profile they assume would contain relevant info about me… but it doesn’t really seem to be accurate (this is kind of by my own choosing though).
Instead articles about rebuilding cars should have ads related to perhaps rebuilding cars and not some fucking nutritional supplement or some other unrelated thing.
Judging by the two Outlooks installed on my cooperate machine I’m guessing Outlook and Outlook (classic) are the two installed… Though they could have “Outlook for Windows” installed too as I see it offering it to me via the Windows store.
