Are you asking about things that weren’t considered dangerous when I was a kid, but are now? I always thought that was largely a cliche? Pretty much everything that I did as a child that is, or could be, considered dangerous today was considered dangerous then, too.

One thing that does come to mind: I don’t think the general public back then was as aware of the danger of second hand smoke. So, exposing kids to cigarette smoke (by smoking indoors, in cars, or even going to public places with smoking sections) didn’t seem to be considered risky or dangerous.

Otherwise, pretty much everything I did as a kid that would be considered dangerous today would also have been considered dangerous back then in the days when dinosaurs ruled the Earth and the wheel had only recently been invented. That includes activities sanctioned by adults, like riding in the bed of a pickup truck, and those which weren’t, like mixing random chemicals together to see what happens.

I’ve only ever lived once place where there was a Target conveniently close, but it was in a shopping center that was an absolute nightmare to get into and out of. I would still order from them online here and there, mostly clothes. But the last few times I’ve ordered clothes online from Target, it’s been absolute crap quality. My last order actually qualified as false advertising. I ordered a button up shirt. It turned out to be velcro, with only one or two buttons at the very top. And the shirt was so short, it exposed the bottom of my belly button. Prior to that, I ordered a pack of underwear that stunk so bad of chemicals, it made me nauseous.

So, regardless of all the other crap going on with Target, I’d already stopped shopping there.

I recently lost my job due to the federal government cancelling contracts with my employer. I won’t claim that I’m going through Hell, but it’s far from unicorns and rainbows.

It’s definitely a lot to deal with emotionally all at once. I worry that I may not find a job that I genuinely enjoy as much as the one I lost. Even though I know it’s not strictly because of anything I did wrong, I struggle with the idea that I was considered unimportant and expendable. It also makes me feel like I’m not a reliable “breadwinner” for my family. Then there’s the little things, like the fact that I’m having to cut back on purchases that aren’t necessities, forgo expenditures that I was hoping to make, and things like that. On top of all that, I have a lot of guilt about feeling bad for myself knowing that a number of my former coworkers who were also let go are in a lot worse situations than me.

I’m able to be a bit optimistic about some things. For instance, I’m glad that the ACA (health insurance not tied to employment) is an option. The COBRA healthcare coverage option is ridiculously expensive, but most of the ACA options are notably less expensive and, at least on paper, seem to be better options (ex: lower copays, deductibles, max out of pocket) and there are tax credits you can take based on income that make it even less expensive. Another benefit is that being unemployed gives me more time with my family, more time with friends, and more time to catch up on all the little chores that need my attention.

But, at the end of the day, I will say that I’m strongly considering getting some psychiatric help and/or therapy. The only thing holding me back at this point is concerns over whether I can truly afford it. Sure I can spend $100USD per session for a therapist now, but in a few months, will the cost of those sessions make a difference between whether I have food on the table or not? It’s a gamble that I’m just not quite willing to risk right now.

Probably just a temporary hitch, but I tried to use the app today to look for some Little Britain content. I’m certain that a decade+ ago, HBO carried Little Britain episodes. I was under the impression that Max was basically rebranded HBO and Cinemax in crappified app format.

Tried to open the app, got a loading screen for well over a minute. Closed it and tried to open it again. Waited another minute and it finally showed the profile selection screen. I clicked on my profile and got a completely useless error message, so I clicked on my partner’s profile and it worked. Clicked the up button a few times to get to the search screen, nothing happened. Clicked again, and it finally registered the first few click PLUS the newest click, so it overshot the search icon. Finally got it back to search and then clicked the microphone button so I could speak rather than type. It completely did not understand “Little Britain” and instead searched “Britain britain” with no relevant results. Tried again, and it failed harder. Ended up having to type in Little Britain manually. So 10 minutes later after having the thought that I’d like to watch Little Britain, I finally get the results. Turns out the show isn’t available to watch anymore (or else the search failed, hard to know for sure). Terrible experience.

This should be an embarrassment. I would be embarrassed if I had developed some bullshit like this.

I’m sorry, if you’re growing cherries, fucking expensive ass cherries, and can’t stay afloat without almost a half million dollars of welfare, then what the fuck are you even doing? I don’t fully agree with it, but I at least understand the importance of giving welfare to people growing crops we actually need, but frivolous shit like cherries? What a waste. I don’t know what all goes into consumer confidence, but I can tell you that my consumer confidence has been very low and very pessimistic since November 2024 and that pessimism went into overdrive by January 2025.

I’ve dropped all discretionary spending on big ticket items, even the things I have been planning for and saving for since long before the election. I’ve also cut way back on spending for essentials, skipping out on preferred and “luxury” brands at the grocery store and instead going for generic and brands that I like less but which are cheaper, or just going without. I’ve also cut way back on services. If I don’t know how secure my income is or how long my savings might last, then I’m not going to speed up my ruin by spending now.

Ironically enough, the only people I know who seem to be happy with the economy are the ones who were cheering for the “I did that” stickers and asking “why is eggs so expensive” under Biden but noticeably silent on those topics once Trump became president. Unfortunately for the economy, they are almost entirely low income folks (i.e. social security, food stamps, minimum wage part-time jobs) who aren’t typically drivers of the economy to begin with and who are probably going to be hurt the worst if and when things get really bad.

A number of years ago, I was walking past a cow pasture when I heard a ruckus. The cows were mooing up a storm and there was a flock of geese in the pasture honking back in agitation. By the time I got to the top of the hill and could clearly see what was going on, I witnessed a good ole fashioned standoff.

Perhaps triggered by my sudden appearance in the distance, the geese spooked first. The honking intensified and they started retreating in a hurry as they prepared to take flight, cows charging towards them at full bovine speed.

As the last goose just lifted off the ground, one of the cows managed to catch up and stomp it out of the air mid-flight. Poor bird came crashing down underneath a barrage of hooves flailing on top of it. It tried to lift its head off the ground a time or two, but within moments of its body being crumpled, it was dead.

Everybody acts like Canada geese are bad-asses, not to be trifled with. A goose will leave you broken, but alive. Cows, on the other hand, are blood-thirsty, cold-blooded killers. Watch your back.

In the south we have an idiom “Birds of a feather flock together”, which means people tend to associate with others of similar morals, ethics, beliefs. So, needless to say, I’m hardly surprised. Trump associate and pastor? There was almost no chance this filth was anything BUT a pedophile.

Honestly, it’s almost a relief to hear someone say “sorry about your job” without adding the caveat “but DoD/DoE/NIH/USAID is fraud/waste/bad/scam” to the statement. And yes, it was a pretty darned good dinner as long as healthy wasn’t one of the criteria.

Oh neat! I used to use Fark, too. I just checked and it’s still around, just looks a bit dead compared to how I remember it from back in the day.

I started using it in the late 90’s or early 2000’s, but I stopped sometime in that date range you mentioned. For me, it was the fact that I got multiple back to temporary suspensions (with no warnings). It was like I couldn’t do anything right and to some extent, it felt targeted and personal.

I don’t even remember them all, but two of the suspensions stick out to me. I got banned for posting the picture of the officially unofficial fark squirrel (i.e. Big Balls). Up until that time, it was basically a Fark meme posted openly and frequently by large numbers of users. I guess advertisers didn’t like it and I didn’t get the memo. Another suspension came when I responded to a homophobic bigot who was arguing against legalizing gay marriage in the USA by telling him “if you believe that, you are an idiot”. Apparently that’s name calling, but using cocksucker as a pejorative against another man was still considered A-Okay.

Here’s my purely capitalistic problem with Amazon:

A decade+ ago, I realized that major brands were using the site as their outlet store. I’d buy a pack of socks, and they’d be hideously deformed. I’d buy a few pants for work, one pair would be too small, one too large, and one would fit just right. I’m not fucking Goldilocks.

The final straw for me was when my coffee maker broke. I ordered a new one via same day shipping, which at the time had a minimum order of something like $50. The coffee maker did not cost quite enough, so I added something random to the order so that my same day shipping would be free. Ultimately, the coffee maker arrived late (i.e. not the same day) and the decanter was broken.

When I contacted Amazon about the issue, the agent said they could reship, but they wouldn’t send it same day so for that specific item it was going to take 3 - 5 days to arrive. They also tried to hassle me with a straight up return, telling me I had to take it to a UPS store, which at the time was 30+ minutes away.

Ultimately, I pulled a Karen and told them to cancel my Amazon Prime, which they did. Only problem is, I was 2 or 3 months into the year long subscription and assumed I’d get a pro-rated refund. I did not. When I got back in touch with customer service, they told me that Amazon adds up the value of the “free” shipping I received, the rental value of the movies and shows I watched on Prime, and the value of all the other services included with Prime and if that total exceeds the remaining value of the Prime subscription, then no refund.

They basically stole almost a year of Prime from me with no recourse.

Scum company. I got a lot of hate for saying this back in those days. But at least now, a decade+ later, people are finally starting to wake up. Not everyone, obviously. But at least I don’t get hateful responses and DMs quite as much as I used to.

For sure! I’d love to switch to solar (or any alternative carbon-friendly / carbon-neutral energy source) entirely and specifically for the perceived environmental benefits. But I’m also not in a financial position where I can do it when it happens to cost so much more than traditional means. If I had been fortunate enough, like my neighbor, to have been in the position to make the plunge 10 - 15 years ago, it would make perfect sense. But with all the government subsidies being cut, the power company drastically reducing what they pay for the excess energy, and the cost of batteries plus associated equipment being so high, it’s pushing solar back into the territory of being unaffordable for a lot of people. Really sad in so many ways. And yet, I’m still trying to figure out how I might make it work.

I don’t recall the exact timeline, but about 10 - 15 years ago my neighbor got a bunch of solar panels installed. Between state and federal funding, almost 2/3rds of the cost was subsidized. On top of that, the local power company pays 1-to-1 for the energy she produces during the day because she is grandfathered in. Her power bill maxes out at something like $30.

I was strongly considering getting solar panels for my house in recent history. The power company no longer pays 1-to-1 for new installations, they only pay approximately 30%. So if they charge 18 cents per kilowatt hour, they’d only credit me 6 cents. On top of this, the state I live in no longer offers tax incentives, so the only thing I had going for me was the federal incentives. Even at that, it wasn’t worth it from a purely economic standpoint when I did the calculations.

The icing on the cake is that when the power goes out, you still lose power even if you have solar panels. The only way around that in my part of the world is to go completely off grid, buy a bunch of extremely expensive equipment and batteries, or to have someone do an illegal connection.

So, we came to conclusion that solar wasn’t really affordable for us. The monthly payments on the loan were going to be about 20% higher than our current electric bill and by our calculations, it was going to take about 17 - 20 years to break even. And that’s only if the equipment lasts that long, which is a gamble given our weather that includes hurricanes, tornadoes, and so on.
