  • A 2020 academic study with a sample size of 372 respondents found that 40 percent of transgender people had attempted suicide. It found that interpersonal microaggressions and emotional neglect by family members were the leading contributors to the attempts.

    Similarly, in 2016, the National Transgender Discrimination Survey found that 41 percent of 6,450 respondents said they had previously attempted suicide. By comparison, the CDC found that in 2020, 0.36 percent of the population had attempted suicide.

    According to a 2022 survey by The Trevor Project, an LGBTQ+ suicide prevention organization, nearly 1 in 5 young people who identified as transgender or non-binary have attempted suicide.

    Meanwhile, a 2018 study of more than 120,000 children age 11 to 19 found that 41.8 percent of non-binary adolescents—those who do not identify as definitively male or female—had attempted suicide

  • The craziest part of that article is

    Vice co-founder Shane Smith stepped down as CEO in 2018, but has remained the company’s (…) The Canadian-born journalist’s focus seems to be trained on the southern border, with an editorial line closer to Trump campaign fearmongering than hard news reporting. (Smith is not to be confused with Vice co-founder Gavin McInnes, who left the media company and established the far-right militant group the Proud Boys).

    So two of the three Vice media founders are now far right? I tried to find out more about Suroosh Alvi, the third founder, but didn’t see much. Though on his X (🤢) he posts and reports a bunch of pro Gaza stuff.

    I shouldn’t be surprised cuz it looks like they all got rich off Vice, but still.

  • Yeah Doug was just a tenuous reference to Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy’s secret Ruler of the Universe.

    I agree, AI is problematic. In theory, that could work in my favor if I train it to be secretly biased towards my beliefs, and put in safeguards to prevent it from being retrained or removed. But I imagine in the real world that would fail spectacularly.

    No system can be perfect with imperfect humans and bad actors at its core, and I don’t really think AI should have any power over humans. Sorry, I kinda brought this down a rabbit hole away from the original point of the post lol

  • Ah, well if enforcement is part of the thought experiment then that’s only a couple extra amendments. The clear enemy of fascism is democracy;

    • Enforcement is led by an oversight committee that is democratically elected by the general population every four years

    • The oversight committee is overseen by an AI trained in intellectual honesty, ethics, and democracy

    • The AI is periodically trained and updated by Doug, a Minnesota resident who answers Survey Monkey questions on his opinion of ethics and democracy and is unaware of the consequences of his responses. Only the AI knows. No one else must know. Human bias has been conquered and postage peace has been achieved.
