  • In my experience XMPP is easy to set up, lighter on resources, and the clients tend to work well across multiple platforms. We have small private and public groups using it daily with zero complaints.

Matrix tends to be more involved in setting up, and our group ran into issues where some clients weren’t working as smoothly or reliably as we needed for a primary communication platform. We also had a huge problem with traffickers of all sorts joining our rooms to spam their telegram links or CSAM. That hasn’t been a problem after more than a year on XMPP.

  • I understand your frustration! Unfortunately I don’t have an easy answer.

The culture on Lemmy can cause a fair bit of confusion at first. We have this phenomenon where people migrate here and want to have all the niche communities that existed where they came from without the users required to maintain those places. As a result we have a lot of communities with little to no interaction because it’s usually just one or two people contributing. The situation you’re describing is a pretty common example of this.

If you’re looking for existing communities you may have better luck finding them on Lemmyverse. If you still don’t find the type of place you’re looking for, you might consider creating a community for the more generalized content you want to share. If that isn’t something you feel comfortable taking on alone, maybe others would be willing to help you run it and keep things active. Lemmy is full of people looking for places to participate!

  • I want my posts to be accesable

If you mean you want to move the entire account to somewhere else as if it started there, you can’t. If you were to create an account on a new instance and imported your old profile data you’d save yourself the time of resubscribing to communities etc but your post history would be brand new again. You can have accounts/alts on multiple instances though and people often do. Some people keep them as backups, some swap accounts multiple times a day for whatever reason.

Using an alternative frontend is different. You login using the same credentials you already have on that instance. All that changes is the UI you’re using, everything on the backend is still the same and you are still the same person to the rest of the Fediverse.

  • Symfonium is ridiculously customizable and well worth the one time cost IMO, but like you said it requires purchase and through the Play store.

DSub is on Fdroid and works well though it lacks many of the customization options that Symfonium has. It’s kind of like a mobile mode of the default Navidrome webUI.

Those are the two I keep installed at all times because I use them for different things. The other options for Android either had weird quirks I didn’t like or didn’t offer functionality I needed.
