  • The only thing you need to be careful of is falling out of touch with modern life because you’re still watching 90s films in the 2050s. Part of my enjoyment of the niche entertainment I consumed in the 90s came from seeking out new people to enjoy it with, searching for it on the proto-internet, and forming communities around the experience of watching it. I find that nowadays I can watch the film again but it just doesn’t bring the same kind of enjoyment that it did when I watched it 30 years ago. I hope I live long so I can see more new entertainment options come out and try those too, and my dvd collection gets lost and broken and water damaged from being left in the closet where it belongs.

  • Get off here. It’s documented mental illness at this point. I come from the beforetimes. When I was a teenager, a/s/l was redundant because the BBS was a local call, and if you wanted to see what someone looked like they had to own a scanner, which was rare and expensive. It was liberating to be able to talk to people and make friends without the superficiality of irl interactions.

Modern internet is profit-motivated and monetization is driven by engagement. It takes time and effort to curate your experience to squelch what the platform wants to show you, which is content you’re most likely to engage with at the time you’re most likely to engage with it. You’re not talking to your friends anymore. It’s an isolating experience.

The next time you’re talking to someone or replying to a post, looking for your gotcha mic-drop moment, consider why you came here in the first place. Are you here deliberately, or are you just using the internet service that came with your smartphone? Go out into the world instead. Constant rage is unhealthy. Voting, community moderation, logins, persistent identity, and profiles have made the internet experience way more image-obsessed than the irl experience ever was. Your discourse is being streamlined, not encouraged and diversified.

tl;dr: go find your tribe, your real tribe.

I’m saying that shooting Kirk had nothing to do with hateful people finding their way to hate propaganda. If their reasons for joining a known hate group are that thin, they would have joined it anyway, or a different one, or started their own.

  • No state has received full funding for their snap/ebt as of this morning. Some funds are being released by the federal government to states but not fully, not uniformly, and with serious delay. I can’t find any credible evidence that anyone has definitely received their full November benefits as scheduled. In fact, the USDA has told states they can’t fund the cards and then be reimbursed by the federal government under current rules and the USDA has stated, as of this morning, that they will not fully fund benefits due to the shutdown.

I don’t believe you are telling the truth.

  • Folks who are not members of a privileged ruling class have no real say about what their leadership does with the military regardless of the illusion of choice they’re given on election day. The idea that average, working class Americans are responsible for national guard troop deployments in US cities for stated political purposes can only come from a privileged person who has the kind of power and control to do anything to affect the situation. I know that’s not me.

If anyone wants a suggestion for something they can personally do to help America’s national situation, go to the food bank and move boxes around, and if you’ve got enough money to do it, go to the local megamart and buy all the clearance and donate it. Food stamps are gone starting Monday.
