Is Garuda a serious distro? Last I heard it was basically a few people’s hobby project. Not to say one shouldn’t use it, but I don’t know if it’s on par with EOS and Cachy.

I’ll just assume you’re serious and not trying to be a troll. Those aren’t launchers or different clients for the same game, they are different games. It’s the same as how Tux Cart isn’t compatible with Mario Kart. It’s just not the same thing. You also wouldn’t assume a Teardown mod works in Minecraft, just because both are voxel-based, right?

There are open source Minecraft launchers like Prism, those are cool and useful, and frankly way better than the official one, but they use a Microsoft account too, as your ownership of the game has to be verified, and you can’t connect to servers without one.

Stripped down to the bare essentials, those are similar. But surely you realize, that the sheer amount of content that was added over the years, and the enormous amount of mods, and the entire community, aren’t remotely comparable, right?

This is less of a Photoshop for drawing vs Krita and more of a Photoshop for image editing vs GIMP situation, and even that comparison is kind of unfair to GIMP.

The problem is, even if I am willing to deal with some inconveniences, many others aren’t. How am I going to move a server with >100 active users and multiple thousand inactive ones? And what about the six others I have that fit that description? There’s quite a few servers I could go without, but around a dozen that I’d much prefer not to lose.

I’ve already been trying, but people don’t like Revolt, Nerimity, Matrix, hell I tried Mattermost. Some people are fine with some of these platforms, but there is never any remote consensus.

At least some have cancelled their nitro subscription, making them a net loss for Discord in the future.

Discord has, despite everything, been my primary chat/social app and to switch to something else one has to uproot absolutely everything. That’s sadly not feasible.

It isn’t even that. He is a horrible monster, but what makes him so appealing to me is that he is completely delusional about it. With his new men he genuinely sees himself as the saviour of humanity, despite the fact that his plan for his new men is to destroy and replace humanity. It’s almost like a tragedy, which I find very appealing.

That’s why heretic books like the Fabius Bile or Nightlords trilogy are great. Even authors who forget they should be writing villains on the loyalist side can remember that the traitors are evil. However, at least for those two trilogies, their authors also write them as likeable characters somehow. I would hardly call them anti-heroes, but they are understandable in their own messed up ways. It’s how I feel the loyalists should have been written.

Let’s try a metaphor. Say I have a bike. Someone’s trying to sell me another bike, based on it having two wheels, both compatible with standard tubes, and optionally having a luggage rack, if I bring my own and attach it. Then I would also be asking them what their bike actually does and why I should bother swapping mine out for theirs, because it just looks like an extremely standard bike. It doesn’t mean I do not know what a bike is.

The question about lawnchair specifically has mostly been answered by comments now, but the website still does a very poor job explaining what it does over any other launcher, especially compared to the stock one.

Sure, but what are those? Maybe I’m the issue, but the website seems to be made for people who are already intimately familiar with the possibilities of a custom launcher, because they’re hardly listed anywhere, there’s no list of features or anything.

Well, there is one list, but it’s

1. “Pixel design, but more customizable somehow” How? Dunno, isn’t explained
2. “The latest android features” which is cool but also something I have on my stock launcher
3. “QuickSwitch support” which is not explained (some research makes me believe it’s API access to the default launcher that’s needed to show recent applications, which is also a feature my native launcher has) and needs root according to the FAQ. So can I not access my recent applications if my phone isn’t rooted?

And the wiki is just from the dev side, which is interesting, but doesn’t provide the proper info. I’m sure it’s cool if so many people here like it, but the website’s doing a poor job at showing that off.

Edit: Basically it seems to me like the selling points of most Android forks, which are generally “We’re slightly worse in some areas, but generally have feature-parity, possibly slightly better customization/settings, and you’re free of Google spyware” which is admittedly a selling point, but here you don’t even get rid of spyware if you’re on regular Android, and if you are already on a fork, then why bother?

I just checked out the website and I’m having a hard time understanding what the point of it is. I’ve never installed any sort of custom launcher, so maybe I’m missing out, but the application advertises itself on being very similar to the regular pixel launcher, not needing root access, and nothing else. Even in the FAQ I only see that it supports some plugin that upgrades some widget, unless you have root where it supports whatever you can do with the “recents api”. Neither of those seem remotely worth it. So what does it actually do?

Then it’s probably not a good idea to be on Lemmy. It’s written in Rust, which is a programming language funded by a lot of unapologetically evil big tech companies, like Microsoft and Google. It was also initially created by Mozilla, a company with heavy associations with Google and which has even become quite pro-AI.

I’d say using tools funded by evil counts as “loosely associated”.

I thought these were still common? Any time I’m near a church they do their thing every 15 minutes, banging one bell 1-4 times and then if it’s 4 they bang another 1-12 times, signaling the time.

Well, not entirely, they’re usually quiet during the night, but you get my point.

It kind of reminds me of the whole Rust situation in a way. The evangelists were so heavy-handed that an active counter-movement developed, and with the adoption being wider the fanatics are heard less and what remains is their counterpart. We certainly aren’t quite there yet with the Linux discussion, but it seems to be what we’re heading towards.

I’m still on Discord because everyone else is there. I’ve moved my direct social connections, so most of the things I’d use Discord dms for on a daily basis, over to dedicated direct messaging services, but communities are so much harder to move over. You can’t shuffle between a hundred and a thousand people over to another platform unless somehow most of the groups they’re in move over at once.

And to what? Matrix communities are not as convenient, Revolt’s voice chats are not as good and screen sharing wasn’t a thing at all last I checked and it doesn’t have a mobile client, and TeamSpeak is primarily voice-based.

Oh they have a lot to do with the decisions of politicians. But more on topics of economy and how they can profit as much as possible, rather than the supply of arms. Still I swear every second politician here is getting bribes “funds” from the car lobby.

I think part of it is that they can actually do anything long-term. Even the most altruistic president in for example the US will get four, at most eight years to do what they’re planning. That’s not enough time to do anything meaningful, all the while they’re dealing with flak from the consequences of the last presidency, and their successor will at best take credit for their achievements, at worst destroy them before they succeed. And that’s assuming the citizens didn’t elect a self-serving megalomaniac.

Winnie the pooh, I’m pretty sure, actually cares about his country. He’s by no means benevolent, but he has the power, resources, and time to build proper infrastructure and reshape the country as he sees fit.

Socially they’re way behind from what I, as an outsider, can tell. Women’s rights at least seem somewhat acceptable with definite room for improvement, but queer rights are even worse. Oh and there’s a literal genocide of Uyghurs so that’s pretty fucking bad.

But the benefits of China’s dictatorship lie in the fact that they can actually think in the long-term and not just until the next election (the politician’s equivalent of the next financial quarter) so they can wield their powers and resources to achieve these goals. The glorious leader must be praised for centuries to come, that can’t happen if the earth becomes uninhabitable due to climate change or the country crumbles in on itself due to failing education and a failing economy.

Now if only that applied to citizen’s rights…

For me it’s pretty likely to replace it, at least on my laptop. Don’t get me wrong, I love Plasma, but per-screen workspaces and native window tiling are two features I never knew how much I needed before I tried out Hyprland some months back, especially on a single screen. While I’ll definitely miss the desktop panels and extensive settings menu, I’ll give those up for the other features without much of a second thought.

Proton is based on Wine, when people say Wine in a gaming context, there’s a decent chance they just mean Proton. Also there’s absolutely no need for gaming distros in this situation, gaming works out of the box on any (semi-normal) distro, the most you’ll have to do is flick a switch in Steam.

Edit: Or in this case with the Sims install Lutris I guess, since it’s an EA game, but that also isn’t much more difficult

So from my understanding you may very well be correct, instead of trying to block unions through negative reinforcement, they try to block them by rewarding you for not joining one.

She’s what one would generally refer to as a tankie and even refers to herself as extremist, so I do believe that is the appropriate term.

Apparently to some that’s the goal. I had a chat with a leftist a while back while the US election was in full swing and she was absolutely against the concept of voting for a lesser evil, since the worse things get, the more people will turn to leftist extremism, which is a win in her book. Suffice it to say, that talk made me anything but sympathetic of her view…
