Started with Lubuntu in 2011, then I used Bodhi for many years. 3 or 4 years ago I switched to Linux Lite. Now I use Debian and Lite for myself and my wife’s laptop is set up with Mint XFCE. Right now I’m testing out what works best with a detachable laptop that has limited hardware capabilities.

(Please recommend me a lightweight Distro with good touch integration that’s not KDE Plasma, Debian with Gnome (Debian-based Distro is okay) or PostmarketOS. Or a lightweight DE with touch gestures that also supports display scaling.)

Depends on what your definition of “good” and “free” is. If “free” means no money down and also no ads then I’d recommend Unciv. I think it’s quite good.

SOME models do work pretty good with PostmarketOS. Very few with all hardware features working, some with nearly all features working. Mostly classical laptop devices. Convertibles and tablets on the other hand work generally less good. Well of course there’s a gigantic shitload of devices that don’t even have a functional display and a even bigger pile that’s not even booting.

I did exactly that. That thing with the screw is only for older models. I did it on a somewhat newer model and I had to open it up and disconnect the battery. Newer models need a SuzyQ cable to switch from ChromeOS to Linux. All of them need to run the MrChromebox script after disabling write protection. Well, except ARM Chromebooks. They are not compatible with the script. For some of these devices PostmarketOS is the way to go.

At first I used Jerboa, after some time it didn’t work anymore with my old instance. I switched to Voyager for a long time, switched instances as my old one got abandoned and defunct from the owner. After some time Voyager didn’t work anymore with my new instance and now I am using Raccoon.

If you’re capable of a language other than english, try the localized feddit.randomcountryTLD sites, like

Feddit.org (mostly german)

Feddit.nl (mostly dutch)

and so on. There are many of them and have just a little to nearly no american spam.

Throwing errors? My dads Windows 8 machine does not throw any error. It’s just as slow as the continental drift. For years already he just keeps blaming his internet connection for that, which is obviously wrong because my Linux laptop works absolutly fine and responsive inside the same network. He doesn’t even think about it that his computer itself could be the problem. I suspect it is part of a botnet or some shit like that but he does not care what I say, so I don’t care about his online vulnerability. Because of all this I know that inconveniences do not necessarily convince a person to do something that’s needed to be done (use Linux or buy new device).

Many of the things you said are definitely right. But People who ACTUALLY need Windows for stuff like Photoshop or whatever would buy a new PC anyway. I think more of the casual “we always did it like that” kind of user. What do most of them need? Language localization, Firefox (or Chromium or for fucks sake even Edge), basic text editing and a basic PDF Viewer. For that kind of usage profile you definitely don’t have to force Windows 11 on your 12 year old PC. Any Linux can do that job like Windows would do, but without using scripts to force it on your machine and most likely with better performance too.

Well, that’s what I said. Old shitboxes and such. May be old, but would run like a charm with Linux. But is a shitbox because the installed OS (WIndows in this case) is completely obsolete.

People actually do this shit? Bruh. Why jump through hoops installing Windows 11 when installing Linux (the ones with graphical installer) is much easier and much less of a hassle? smh

Most people don’t give much thought to their operating system, but with Windows 10 support ending in October 2025, many will start searching for alternatives…

I predict most of them are going to waste a ton of money and buy a Window 11 device. Or waste a shit-ton of money and buy a Apple device. Or just say “fuck it” and keep Windows 10 (that’s what my mom will surely do. I stopped caring, as my dad still wants to use his even older Windows 8 shitbox and my mom 100% agrees to this).

I have a Fairphone 4 with preinstalled /e/OS and I can say I really like it. I really don’t miss the Google Apps, but if you would need any you could install most of them. Lastly they had a major server fuckup (many Murena services were unavailable, like Update and Drive) but that’s solved mostly now.

Try toggling hardware acceleration in VLC settings. Had something similar with an older video.

Just visit the KZ Gedenkstätte Dachau and look at the disturbing pictures that are exhibited there. I was there for the first time back in 2005 (before AI based pictures) and there is A TON of pictures like these from Dachau. This is all real.

I used Enlightment for the last few years, but switched this year to XFCE because i like the look more. I’m using old-as-fuck-hardware and both DEs work good on my machines.

At the moment? Watching Anime. A few years ago? Watch music videos of songs I already know on youtube and see what the algorithm spits out.
