Item 3 is even shovelling more AI into more places. About the only thing that is real in that list is the taskbar being able to be moved, and this was something they have promised would happen since they rewrote the taskbar and crippled its functionality.

No country has managed a transition to communism, all of them got turned into various types of authroritarian dictatorships. There is no known method for transitioning to communism and maintaining it.

I still had some issues with the mouse speed on cachyos even after I disabled acceleration. I felt off on its default and I ended up boosting it. Thing is my mouse has its speed inbuilt so I don’t need external software or anything else to configure it on Linux so I don’t understand why I had to boost the speed to make it behave a bit better, it felt like there was some latency as well.

Theft has a very specific definition, critically it requires the taking of something so that someone else is permenantly deprived of the thing. When something is cloned or copied its not theft, its all intellectual law driven so copyright and trademark breaches. No one is deprived of the product, only potentially the payment for a service.

Alas I don’t think the USA will have the political stability to ultimately allow the adoption of an alternative. There is zero point building something that also accommodates the USA right now as the new King is quite likely to ban it and waste all the time put into it. Even a treaty put in place wouldn’t stop this from happening, so frankly its not worth an EU or any other countries company anticipating doing anything with the USA for the foreseeable future.

They are talking hectares in this and it looks like the power density is below that of batteries, but its also cheaper per MWh.

A home long term battery makes a lot of sense, I have thought for a while something that goes from water and the air into methane or even liquid fuel would be highly beneficial as it could run from a generators through the winter and act for long term storage without requiring a turbine.

Because they weren’t invented in 1925? Any durability testing you do today is about assumptions where you accelerate the process for a year by heating it or exposing it to water or whatever will degrade it most to some factor above normal and then extrapolate. That extrapolation was wildly wrong with CDs and it could be with this medium too. Or it might last a lot longer. What they have not done is written to a bunch of them and stored them in a variety of ways for 100 years and concluded they last that long.

Making desktop applications has become a nightmare in anything but C or C# and that isn’t exactly a language people really want to be programming in these days. That is a big part of the problem there aren’t good GUI bindings for a lot of languages and most programmers nowadays have been building websites and working with GUI APIs is a huge step back.

Everyone is preferring server/web solutions now as its easier to charge customers for it and keep it up to date and the knock on consequence is desktop app support isn’t great or considered important.

A 9800X3D gets ~820 single thread and ~8600 multithread. So its 41% the speed on single thread and 30% multithreaded. That is more than a decade out of date still a long way to go.

Its not the populace, our politicians just like in the US have gone rogue. People are voting for the nutters due to anti immigration propaganda and so increasingly getting far right. Its happening across the entire western world and its bad news for everyone.

Most technology adoption follows an S curve, it can often take a long time to start to get going. Linux has gradually and steadily been improving especially for games and other desktop uses while at the same time Microsoft has been making Windows worse. I feel more that this is Microsoft’s fault, they have abandoned the development of desktop Windows and the advancement of support for modern processor designs and gaming hardware. This has for the first time has let Linux catch up and in many cases exceed Windows capabilities on especially gaming which has always been a stubborn issue. Its still a problem especially in hardware support for VR and other peripherals but its the sort of thing that might sort itself out once the user base grows and companies start producing software for Linux instead.

It might not be enough, but the switching off Windows 10 is causing a change which Microsoft might really regret in a few years.

Grid forming will just mean the keep running the house when the power goes off, it’s not safe for them to be pushing power when it’s disappeared, that has been set by regulation in many countries.

So many of the GPUs have been crippled for the purposes of gaming and there is zero incentive for Nvidia to produce drivers for those cards to do anything else. Alas they will just end up in landfill.

OpenWRT supports two devices for wifi 7 on filogic 880 at the moment in snapshot, the banana R4 with BE14000 wifi card add on, its a development board, and the Asus BT8. There are still plenty of issues but Wifi 7 is starting to come to OpenWRT and these MT7988 devices are going to be the major thing supported first.

The problem is we have done nothing about making businesses responsible for the mess they create, from CO2 to pollution. The public always ends up with the bill while private owners walk away rich. We have been doing it this way now for so long that we are genuinely going to destroy our habitat with climate change and no one is going to stop it happening.

Microsoft remains convinced we want clippy everywhere regardless of how many times we have rejected these solutions!

Most of those limits have already been broken through and there is no political will to do anything but stamp on the accelerator and take humanity off the cliff at top speed.

Depends on the headset, they don’t all work on Linux unfortunately.

Universities have been running Linux since the very early versions. Slackware was pretty common back in the 90s and 2000s and universities had labs full of them not least because there weren’t really laptops so they had to have enough machines for all the students. Universities have been heavily involved in the development of unix from its inception and a lot of the tools were initially written by university professors.
