  • I think you make some good points here, but just for context, I do think that there is a level of responsibility on the parents here in combination with the companies. There’s plenty of “online literacy” classes that I think would be appropriate for adolescent education. I’m the unfortunate benefactor of needing to master cursive as a class one year and then typing the next year. Schools would be more beneficial if they included teaching kids internet literacy. They can probably drop some of the old stuff. They also don’t teach several other things like financial literacy in many situations (despite heavy capitalist leanings in real life). The education system sucks, but that is not an excuse to let iPad kids control my freedoms, and the root cause for age verification has never been about protecting children in the first place.

  • I’m also a layman, but I have read some discussions about this exact comparison. Essentially, the big mainstream sites often have personalized algorithms for each user that learns and adapts specifically to the user to feed the user whatever junk food content it can to keep them engaged. Algorithms on things like base lemmy or maybe reddit in the past just have a sort function like excel that propped up posts with more likes or more comments. You can see what other people are interested in, but it’s not targeting YOU. The predatory targeting algorithm can put a person into a self fulfilling echo chamber that in some ways resembles psychosis. This could naturally evolve into actual psychosis for individuals. I think the old verbage of “touch grass” was the prescription for fighting the effects. I think it’s a lot harder to “touch grass” when people are increasingly online and have fewer and fewer avenues to get out of their own echo chamber while staying online almost exclusively. I’m not an expert and the people I got this info from have no credentials I can source, but the logic seems sound to me. Anyone else with better credentials should weigh in if I’m wrong.

The Internet went from globalizing us to partitioning us pretty suddenly, and I think we are seeing the effects now.

  • I agree with your reasoning but I think it highlights a major difference between genders in those stories. The hulk has decades of backstory that lets you just throw him into any plot as a badass. You don’t need to invent why he’s a badass because we all know it and the origin story is so played out that we all gloss over it. Now do that with a female character. Writing the equivalent to decades of lore in one origin story and then doing something with that origin in the same movie is way harder. Wonder Woman would be kinda similar but those origins are muddy with misogyny vibes. So now you have to use well established S tier characters to garner attention and bring in a fresh female face of similar calibar of power and act like they earned decades of respect in one movie. Either you’re Mary sue or treated like a child in those situations. The lore fights female empowerment because of baggage. I feel sorry for anyone trying to write for a character like she hulk with all of the obstacles that exist, but I get why the attempts weren’t successful.

  • It’s funny you use southwest as an example in this. I flew with them for the first time this year and it was easily the worst technical experience from an IT perspective that I have ever had. Sure I got from point A to point B, but everything involved with buying the ticket, getting through security, tracking my flight, boarding time, etc was worse than every other flight I’ve been on. The app was awful and basic features like delay notifications or pulling up the digital ticket made an already expensive as hell experience way more stressful. Windows 95 isn’t keeping up

  • Yeah the most upsetting part is that a soulless cash grab between a historically great athlete that could’ve not gotten involved and a hack influencer with a strong following of youths happened at all. It’s teaching young minds that money means everything and tricks them into thinking any part of this fight was fair or real. It makes boxing look bad, especially after watching a very legitimate and hard fought match minutes earlier. Jake needs to fight someone who’s a real competitor. No more retirees, basketball players, etc. If this was two old guys boxing then it would have felt very different to me. The match sucked and the viewer was the biggest loser throughout all of it.
