Hey everyone, two of us have been working on a privacy-focused Discord alternative for some time and we’re opening it up for early testing to see how it performs and to get real feedback.

Kloak is privacy-first by design. There are no emails and no passwords. When you join, you’re given a secret key, and that key is your account. There is no recovery mechanism and no central identity tied to you. If the key is lost, the account is gone. This is intentional and meant to reduce stored user data and avoid creating identity honeypots.

Most of the core features are already in place. You can create servers, channels, roles, and permissions, upload files and custom emojis, etc.

We’re still early, and the main goal right now is to validate the model, catch UX issues, and stress the system a bit before going further. We’re especially interested in thoughts around the key-based account approach and any privacy or security trade-offs we may be overlooking.

The warnings were there with many people trying to prevent it happening, but it was ignored enough to become what we have today. Globally.

I knew it was Australia, didn’t realise that there was such a monopoly. Still possible, just makes it harder. Are there stores that aren’t part of any chain? They’re dying out here, usually the owners have signed up to a franchise.

It’s unlikely to happen anyway, but there should be a way that we can universally stop greed.

Boycott the stores that use them, it might help them change their mind behind they become the norm.

Yeah, but if accounts are made on mumble for example, the migration will happen there quicker. Then if that doesn’t suit many, others are an option. I’m guessing whichever platform benefits from this will happily make any changes that are currently missing.

The problem with steam is that it will eventually go the same way.

At the moment the internet is being used by big tech similar to a sheepdog rounding up sheep. Hopefully most will refuse this and move platform, that platform will eventually attempted to be broken down and register a few more users etc. If you have younger siblings or kids, they’re fucked.
