the self hosted version is a bit broken right now, I hope they fix it, but I tried last night and couldn’t get voice to work. Really want an alternative to discord

ya I’m setting up matrix with cloudflare tunnels now, first time using cloudflare tunnels, pretty cool. I’m not thrilled at having to depend on a third party service to connect to my own stuff, but it’s better than my home IP being public.

Let me know if you get it working with voice channels, tried tonight, no luck, couldn’t make voice channels at all. For text it’s fine I guess but that’s not enough.

Tonight I’ve tried a bunch of options

revolt/stoat, and I couldn’t make voice channels at all. If I could and it worked fine probably would have used that immediately

spacebar chat, got the server running just fine, no idea which UI to use, and when I tried the options I couldn’t connect to the server and it was really clunky

setup team speak 6, immediately wanted me to create an account on their servers, rm -rf

setup mumble - might actually work, but looks like ass, friends are gonna be skeptical

setting up full blown matrix now I guess.

it is, and they don’t understand that the hardware on a 3d printer isn’t capable of analyzing what it’s about to print like that, it’s not even close. People average laptop couldn’t even analyze a random part and give a reasonable estimate of how likely it is a gun part unless it’s an exact match, but if you tweak 1 thing it would be lost.

I don’t think these lawmakers have any clue how anything works. 3d modeling, slicing, and firmware would all have to have spyware in it and be uploading data to the cloud to be analyzed for this to be remotely possible. Not only is that financially impractical, it’s logistically impossible.

From personal experience, I went that route (open source non profit) and it ended up being a shit show, i wouldn’t assume it’s better. I think going the route of just producing things people want to make their life easier is somewhat reasonable. I’ve been having a bit of a time sorting this out myself.

Could also be much better. If we built more nuclear plants decades ago electricity would be much cheaper and data centers would be way less of a concern.
